MOST hotel groups in the UK will experience a ‘satisfactory, if unspectacular’ trading year in the meeting and events sector – that’s according to a report carried out by Grass Roots HBI as part of its annual Meetings Industry Review. The US fiscal cliff and ongoing financial uncertainty in Europe were cited as factors affecting the market, with growth in the meetings and events sector described as 'modest at best'. The report also suggests that
while top-end London venues enjoyed an Olympic boost in 2012, venues in other parts of the country had to cut rates, particularly in the mid-tier. In Scotland, daily delegate
rates (DDR) plummeted by 35 per cent at the three-star level, while Wales was similarly affected, experiencing a 27.5 per cent decrease in rates for the
same types of properties. The three-star sector also
failed to shine in London, but this decline was more than countered in the top-end five- star range where rate increases were close to 20 per cent. The four and five-star sector
across Europe had mixed results, with rates in Athens, Budapest
and Milan falling, while rates in Zurich, Paris, Istanbul, Brussels and Barcelona all went up. Major cities in other parts
of the world that were surveyed at the five-star level all showed healthy growth in rates, with Mumbai being the stand out performer, posting double digit growth of 18 per cent.
