MOSS-AWAY from Everbuild Clean up at Easter
Independent Review by Peter Brett
Before I started this test of the new Moss- Away product from Everbuild I had never really given much thought to the restrictions that our frightful weather has given us this year. It seems, that despite our human efforts, the world and weather carries on as it will, and we just have to fit around – even in the simple task of clearing the brick patio from moss and sundry small growths. But forget about that for a moment and
cast an eye over the Moss-Away product. Available in a wide range of sizes from 50ml sachets or 5litres of concentrate, the interest of the small gardener or the professional landscaper can be easily catered for by the retailer. The sachets come in a handy counter
display carton that is easy for retailers to have on show in the moss killing season, which as I now know, seems to be anytime, if my patio is anything to go by. I had a couple of sachets to use on the small brick
paved space where the moss had started to take over and where the surface was becoming increasingly slippery and dangerous as a result. A single sachet dissolved in five litres of water is usually enough to cover about thirty square metres. The surface about to be treated needs to be clear
of dead leaves and debris, so I started by giving the brick paving a brisk sweep with a stiff-bristled yard broom. This actually produced quite a lot of material, so it is an important step. Next, I filled a
watering can with five litres or so of warm water as this helps the Moss-Away to dissolve more easily. The sachet is then unwrapped and dropped into the water. There is thus no need for skin contact with the chemicals. I gave the whole thing a good stir with a slim wood paddle and then started to apply it. It is a good idea
to wear wellies to avoid any skin splashes, but the application I did took no more than ten minutes. Then with an
anxious eye on the heavens I had to leave the Moss-Away to work. Deadlines are deadlines, but the weather is no
respecter of them, so I had a few days when the conditions were not ideal for the Moss-Away to work. For example it is recommended that the solution is not applied if rain is imminent, but down here in

Sussex, the weather has been dull and damp for what seems like forever. Nevertheless, in a couple of days, it was clear that
there was some difference, and the moss and growth were slowly starting to disappear, leaving a quite clean brick-paved patio that might be ready for the summer. I might just have to do another application of Moss-Away though to get the perfect result. The before and after photos should show the
progress that was made – not bad really for half an hour’s work. No doubt, there are some questions regarding safety that readers might want to ask. Moss-Away has
My experience shows that Moss-Away is
really a simple and safe solution to getting a clean, moss-free patio. But the truth is that Moss-Away has a wider range of applications and these may be more useful for some householders. Moss-Away is in fact formulated as a super
concentrate that can be used to remove mould and algae as well as moss and other types of green growth. In our damp climate we have got used to
seeing moss and algae growing on fences, sheds, roofs, walls and even garden furniture. Moss-Away can be used in all of these
situations to treat the green stuff without having to resort to lots of scrubbing, scraping or pressure washing. For most lightly coated areas, a single treatment of Moss-Away will get
rid of the green algae so that the article can be cleaned, painted or refurbished. I guess that means I have no excuses now for avoiding repainting the storage shed at the side of the house in the next couple of months. As is usual with many Everbuild products, the
company has been careful to ensure that retailers are well looked after and that sales can be maximized. Professional users can buy Moss-Away in bulk in
five litre containers and enjoy the price advantages that come with that. But for the ordinary householder and gardener, the 50ml sachet is a perfect solution. A small sachet or two are relatively cheap to buy and safe to transport and use, since the sachet is soluble. Also, with small children around, it is sensible to have any kind of chemical in a form that is easily and quickly used and not left on a shelf in a shed. The marketing of
the sachets in a carton of 24 sachets ensures high visibility and easy stock control. The other option includes the MOSSBUCKET with eighty 50ml pouches. The only
problem with products like Moss- Away for me is that once I have tried them, I feel kind of duty bound to
been formulated to biodegrade and does not include any acid or bleach. Once dry, it is safe for pets and children to be in the treated area. Simple precautions like rubber gloves and wellies
or shoes should be enough to protect the person who applies the mixture.
continue the improvement. So now that the patio is pretty clear after the second application, it looks like I will have to keep up the good work. Good thing it’s a fairly easy thing to achieve – if only the weather would dry up a little!
