Abrasives
Abrasives are extremely commonplace and are used very extensively in a wide variety of industrial, domestic, and technological applications. Abrasives generally rely upon a difference in hardness between the abrasive and the material being worked upon, the abrasive being the harder of the two substances. This gives rise to a large variation in the physical and chemical composition of abrasives as well as the shape of the abrasive. Common uses for abrasives
include grinding, polishing, buffing, honing, cutting, drilling, sharpening, lapping, and sanding. To the user it is important that the product chosen to perform these tasks is of high quality and fit for purpose. There is a vast range of diamond cutting blades on the market. Modern blades have high cutting speeds, are usable in many applications, are available in a
range of sizes and have excellent cutting ability. With the many uses for abrasives it is vital to have the knowledge to give the correct advice to the customer, to keep an eye on the market and arm
yourself with up to date information. Here at ToolBUSINESS+HIRE Magazine we provide up to the minute information on the latest products from the leading manufacturers. Arming yourself with this information will ensure you make the right choices for the needs of your customer and deliver the best service possible.
Cutting It All – The New MC850 Diamond Blade From Marcrist Marcrist International has unveiled the MC850, a revolutionary new diamond blade that will cut the vast majority of materials found on site. Like other diamond blades the MC850 cuts materials such as bricks, blocks and other building materials, but it takes aluminium and other none ferrous metals, steel
pipes, box section or solid profiles in its stride too. Plastic pipes and fittings and even armoured glass present
no problems for the MC850. Cutting a multitude of different materials has been a long
standing problem for tradesmen and has often required the use of multiple accessories on a power tool, or even two different power tools. The MC850 from Marcrist International eliminates this issue by doing the job with one diamond blade. Up until now metals on site have been cut with
conventional abrasive cutting discs, although these wear very quickly, which means the operator has to change the cutting disc frequently. However, the MC850’s heat resistant vacuum brazed diamond segments will outlast conventional abrasives by a ratio of up to 200 to 1, requiring up to 199 less cutting disc changes! Another advantage of MC850 is that the depth of cut
achieved remains constant for the entire life of the blade. In the case of an abrasive disc it may offer an initial cutting depth of 100mm, but for the second half of its life it will only cut to a depth of 50mm due to wear. That means with the conventional disc, if the operator is cutting a thick piece of material, it may no longer be of use when it is only 50% worn. The MC850 has a high strength steel body with a
reinforcing armoured centre flange, this additional strength allows it to be used to deburr the edge of the cut when cutting metal, something a conventional abrasive will not do without putting the operator in significant danger. The high strength body overcomes the major fear with conventional discs of their susceptibility to side pressure resulting in a disc exploding. With peripheral rotational speeds on grinders approaching 200 miles per hour this can cause serious injury. Conventional abrasives wear very quickly and the material from the disc itself is emitted into the
atmosphere. This material can include aluminium, iron, zinc, silicon and even sulphur! The MC850 does not wear like a conventional abrasive, and hence does not emit any dust or fumes. Further safety benefits from the MC850 are provided by the noise and vibration reduced body, offering
significant noise reduction of up to 16X over other diamond cutting blades available in the UK. Reply No. 15
