SO WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR GENRES OUT THERE AT THE MOMENT FOR SHORT STORIES?

same cycle all over again. It was only when I stopped banging my head against the proverbial big publisher’s wall that I realised there was a window… the short story market.

SO YOU STARTED WITH SHORT STORIES?

Yes. By ‘serving my time’ in the short story trenches I earned my stripes as a writer. With short stories you can produce more of them (compared to novels) in a year, can submit more, and therefore have more chances at an acceptance. You can learn the craft of writing with plot, character, theme etc., by writing to order for these Publisher Call-Outs, all the while gaining published accolades for your CV.

SO TELL US HOW YOU STARTED WRITING…

All my life I’d dreamt of being a published author and I had done pretty much what most people do ± I’d spend months writing a novel, I’d send it away to publishers… and was rejected. I would then lose hope and abandon my dream, only to resurrect it again a few years later with renewed vigour starting the

With eBooks having relatively low

production costs and taking less time to get out than a hard copy.

By the time you come to write that killer novel, your writer’s eye is sharper, your prose more colourful and your dialogue more interesting. And by the time you send your book away to be considered, you have a hefty back catalogue of publishers/ editors you have worked with and, more importantly fans of your work. You’ve built up your reputation as an author and the person deciding

whether your manuscript haunts the slush pile or is forwarded to a senior editor is more likely to take time to consider your work, and hopefully decide on the latter.

Currently the most popular Publisher Call-Outs are for romance/ erotica and horror. Te world has never loved monsters such as zombies and vampires so much, and we have never loved ‘love’ so much. With more and more Kindles/e-Readers being sold, people are not afraid to sit in public reading a bodice ripper or a balls-out horror anymore, as no-one can tell what you are reading ± thus these markets are more popular than ever. I myself have had over 45 stories published/ accepted for publication for anthologies in these two genres and my first novel ‘Bad Blood’, a vampires VS zombies urban horror, is out to buy soon.

BAD BLOOD SOUNDS INTERESTING – HOW CAN WE GET HOLD OF A COPY?

It’ll be available through Amazon. co.uk and direct from the publishers as an eBook - follow me on twitter @ nickyp_author and you’ll be the first to see my new release announcements.

YOU MENTIONED eBOOKS, WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THEM?

With eBooks having relatively low production costs and taking less time to get out than a hard copy, there’s a much quicker turnaround on them and therefore more books and opportunities available than ever before. To keep up with the demand of their ravenous readers, publishers have opened their doors to masses of new talented writers, giving you more possibilities than ever before to become a successful author. Random House have just introduced new eBook only lines as well as Romance publishers Avon Impulse.
