CLUB’S TOP 10 WAYS to Keep Kids Serious about Shooting BY JIM SHAVER, NATIONAL TRAINING CENTER SHOOTING CLUB

#10 Keep the kids thinking about the “Path Ahead”—learning the sport; club, state and national competitions; college; Olympic Games.

#9 Teach them work ethic required to succeed in the sport—“if it is to be, it’s up to me.”

#8 Credible coaching is critical— train and educate your coaches so the kids can believe in them.

#7 Coach kids to compete—match- es measure progress on the Olympic Path.

CLUB MATCHES

#6 Coaches must be motivators— shooting is 10 percent technique and 90 percent mental and 74 percent of the mental part is the WANT to do it.

#5 Organize and execute—kids and parents need to see that they have a good, well run club to help them to get on, and stay on the Olympic Path.

#4 Focus training on meeting short term goals—kids thrive on success.

#3 Understand parents need training too—parents of serious kids want to learn the sport, how to be good parents of athletes and they need to get committed to the Olympic Path.

#2 Be patient—hey, they’re kids! Rarely do they understand things the fi rst time, and normally they have a better way.

#1 Be serious about them having fun (and coaches too)—make that part of the program.
