ACUI (Association of College Unions International )
The ACUI was founded in 1914 and is one of the oldest intercollegiate educational organizations in the nation. Its purpose is to provide the opportunity for student centers to improve their organizations, services, programs, facilities, and to assist in the development of new college unions. Any college or university that presents a program for the cul- tural, educational and recreational life of the student body as a prelimi- nary activity is eligible to join the association. The Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Recreation
Program annually sponsors the National Intercollegiate Trap and Skeet Championships. Open to full-time college students, the championships are the only national tournament in which shooters may compete in fi ve different clay target games in the same program: American Trap, International Trap, American Skeet, International Skeet and Sporting Clays. The NRA sponsors and funds the international events in trap and skeet and oversees the welfare of collegiate shotgun shooting pro- grams. Numerous fi rearm companies and shooting organizations also sponsor ACUI Shotgun. ACUI has organized the Collegiate Clay Target Championships for 44
years. For the last 27 years, the event has been held at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio. Any full-time undergraduate student may compete in college shot- gun competition. Marksmanship instruction in shotgun may be offered through the college’s physical education or recreation departments or through a club. The 2012 program featured 535 students representing 57 schools from across the United States. This is double the number of students who participated three years ago. The majority of the partici- pants shoot three or more events, and those who shoot in all six disci- plines will then qualify for the High Overall Awards. Nearly 90 percent of students participated in American Trap, the tournament’s top event. The biggest year-on-year growth was the 24 percent jump in the number of registered events by these students. Current National Team members Brian Burrows, Haley Dunn and Rachael Heiden competed in the ACUI Clay Target Championships as did 2008 Olympian Sean McLelland.
