With the new rules, the face of Men’s and Women’s 50m Rifl e Three Position is changing. In addition to regular training, shooters will need to prepare separately for fi nals as well.
SEPARATE YOUR FINALS PREP FROM POSITION TRAINING
You will need to train specifi cally for the fi nal so you can concentrate on organization and timing. Training for fi nals is not the optimal time to fi ne tune your positions. Refi ne your positions separately so you get the most out of each training session. The most benefi cial drill I do for fi nals training is the “Up and Down” drill. Many elite shooters use this drill to learn how to quickly get into a good position during the fi nal. The concept of the drill is to spend some time fi nding a good shooting position, fi re 10 quality shots from that position and then break out of the position. After a short break, get back into position focusing on the key points you need to build a solid position. Over time, as you repeat this drill you will be able to acquire your position quicker and with more confi dence.
amples include adjusting my offhand stand in the prone prep time and having different buttplates for each position, so I can simply take one out and put the next one in. Using this many buttplates could get very expensive and is not absolutely necessary, but something to consider. My personal goal is to have all transitions done in less than three minutes and spend the remaining time on acquiring a position and sighting shots.
You should also use your timer during your shot series and
individual shots. As you practice, make a mental note of when you fi red your shots and you’ll start to notice a pattern of when your shots occur. Use this to your advantage by adjusting your routine and spacing out your shots to set an ideal cadence performing fi ve quality shots. Running short or out of time is obviously not an ideal situation, but you also don’t want to rush all your shots and end up watching your timer count down for the next minute and a half either.
