The Bob Violett Pattern plane, the Sundowner (above), used a .40 powered ducted fan for power. This very well might have been the first ducted fan Pattern plane. Another Bob Violett design, the Shrike (at right), has very graceful lines and a flying stab. pylon racing. Quarter Midget racing became a new event in 1974 and sanctioned racing was found all across the country. California was by far the hot bed of pylon racing with races being held up and down the state. Here in the Northeast most of the racing was done by the UPRC (United Pylon Racing Circuit) founded by Hal deBolt in upstate New York and by NEPRO (New England Pylon Racing Organization) which held races in Hadley, MA and Granby, CT.
Being an addicted pylon racer myself I went to many UPRC and NEPRO races where I flew in Formula I and Formula II. Oh yes, the difference between Formula I and Formula II is the wing area. Formula I was limited to 450 square inches maximum area and Formula II had 600 square inch wings. It was Hal deBolt who saw a need for the slower Formula II planes in order to attract less pro- ficient pilots and together with Hal, I wrote the first Formula II rules for AMA.

Back to the picture I mentioned that’s shown above. Would you believe a pylon con- test with 67 contestants? Well there was one in 1974 at San Gabriel, CA and since start- ing positions were determined by judging, the prettiest planes got to take off first and that rule influenced many beautiful planes as can be seen in the photo.

Before closing, I need to mention a very important event held in the USA in 1974, AeroOlympics ’74. Thanks to John Worth and the AMA and the US Navy, the USA hosted the world at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey. This gathering of modelers from around the world featured the RC Scale World Championships won by team USA, Control Line Scale World Cham- pionships with team USSR in first place. Team USA was second.
Indoor microfilm was also a featured event using the giant dirigible hangar. A limited international event in pylon racing was also held along with an international event in thermal soaring and old-timer R/C assisted freeflight.
I hope your winter has allowed you to build a new model. I am putting finishing touches on a LiveWire Trainer. It seems like I have gotten hooked on those early deBolt designs for my Vintage RC Society hangar.
