Adding a bit of cockpit detail is easily achieved with just a few simple scraps of building material. Starting with some blue foam and styrene sheet (above left), Mike Warren’s Martin-Baker Mk 3H ejection seat begins to take shape. 1⁄16-inch balsa and 1⁄32-inch ply give shape to the sides of the seat back. A little more .010 styrene sheet and the basic structure of the ejection seat (above right) begins to take shape. Compare this photo (below left) with the initial building one, and
it is hard to believe that a few bits and pieces of styrene tubing and sheeting along with some glue-drop rivets and a little paint can create such a huge change in appearance. Seen from the rear (below right), a little bit of cloth and string for a drogue chute pack and a uniform of cloth brings the pilot and seat to life. Add in an instrument panel and it completes the illusion that this is a pilot’s “office”, not just a model.
Seen from the front, the cloth used for the seat pack and harnesses (above) really bring the seat to life, and you see how it also covers up the connections/fill valves and switches on the bulkhead behind the cockpit. Finally, the camouflaging of the bulkhead and filling of the “office” (at right) is completed with the canopy in place. Mike’s Flt. Lt. is ready for takeoff.
