FM= right formula I have been rereading old FMissues from as far back as the early ’50s and I can see again where my love for stick and tissue has come from. You have had the right formula for a long time. Don’t let the world forget that freeflight and control line still have value and are fol- lowed by large groups respectively. Most of all, that this is a hobby, not a sport. We need to build, tinker and experiment to advance this life-long and life-changing pursuit.
Thanks for showing all of us the way. TOM ERSTED Easton, OH
Can you help?
I would like to get a replacement for the main wing and mounting support system for a plane that was put out by Kyosho called the Auto Kite 10. It originally had a kite for the top to get airborne, but there was also a regular wing available as an upgrade. The plane was sold as the Skymaster. Any help from your readers would be appreciated.

I read with interest your cover story of Flyzone’s deHavilland Canada-2 Beaver (February 2013). The Beaver was the second aircraft de- signed and built at Downsview in Toronto, Ontario, with this designation; the DHC-1 Chipmunk being the first. Several wood and fabric craft preceded these, but the all- metal trademark was unusual and actually advanced for the times, especially in small craft. Mosquitos, made in the same place, were basically molded plywood. That is why there are none left today. The Beaver persists. During WWII, President Eisenhower had a particular fondness for the “flying jeep”. Little do some people know that it was al- most refused entry at the border because it
was Canadian. “Buy American!” was the staunch protest from patriotic manufactur- ers. However, a tailwind prevailed, and the L-20 came about. The Beaver had a few magical features. It was rugged; all-steel from the firewall for-
ward, and aluminum trusses aft, in mono- coque style.
The Pratt & Whitney Wasp Jr. had the guts, and whether on wheels or floats, it could takeoff and land on a dime... well a quarter! STOL features were flaps and drooping ailerons on a high aspect ratio met- al clad wing. The two cargo/passenger doors were large enough to handle standard-size fuel drums. Remember, bushplanes need fuel and oil. Not by coincidence, the DHC-3 Otter’s cargo doors will accommodate four- foot by eight-foot sheets of plywood. The DHC-5 Buffalo will back up to unload! But I digress... The Beaver comes apart just as easily as it goes together. It’s simple, in the truest sense of the word. The P&W is easy to service or remove. The aircraft is most of all versatile and does many different tasks with ease. The Beaver is above all, practical and such was deHavilland Canada.
In spite of the sale and dismantling of the company several years ago, the legend re- fuses to die!
