welcome EDITOR’S COMMENT

“By all that is Twitter, Alison Moyet was practically the Second Coming that night”

I WENT TO see Alison Moyet at the Bush Hall in London last month. Her one-off gig was billed as an ‘intimate preview of her new album’, a daring concept these days, I would suggest. I mean: when you’ve had a string of hits in the 1980s, the first thing your audience of middle-aged fans wants to hear is an hour of unfamiliar material, isn’t it? Right. Anyway, the venue was sold out. And the new album, the minutes, is not bad. It’s coolly electronic, more than a nod to the Yazoo days, and it’s co-produced by one of my programming heroes, the incredible Guy Sigsworth. But, having read Twitter and other reviews of the night, I seem to be the only person who was critical of Alf. Her banter and rapport with the crowd was witty and smart, and her molasses voice has lost none of its power. But the facts are these: she was on stage for just 80 minutes, which included only four old hits. She missed her cue four times, including during Don’t Go(you’d think...!). There was no support act, and no encore. Tickets cost over £30. What we saw was only worth half that. Maybe Moyet knows some subliminal hypnotic technique, because, by all that is Twitter, she was practically the Second Coming that night. So, what did I miss? Am I just too cynical? Why all the wallpapering over the cracks? I’m at a loss to explain. I receive a number of invites to gigs and shows in this job, but sometimes, buying a ticket brings me to earth with quite a bump. This I know: concert-goers deserve the best, not just from the equipment, the venue and the engineers, but from the artists too.
