Tannoy helps ignite the imagination at Y Ffwrnes

A new £15 million theatre and performance space – Y Ffwrnes, or The Furnace in English – is providing the residents of Llanelli in Wales with a creative hub

DESPITE HAVING only opened earlier this year, Y Ffwrnes Theatre has been in the planning for some time. The project began seven years ago when theatre consultancy ACT Consultant Services undertook a feasibility study on the creation of a new theatre in the area. However funding issues meant the project was shelved. Carmarthenshire County Council then restarted it with new funding in place, albeit greatly reduced. “We came back into the project

around three years ago when the task was to design a theatre on a much reduced budget,” commented Chris Baldwin, director of ACT Consultant Services and the man behind the design of the space and the audio specification for Y Ffwrnes. “It was quite a challenge to take what was a very simple, flat floor, retractable seating concept and give it a little bit of shape and character and quality.” Baldwin knew that one of the most important parts of a new build like this was the audio system. Having worked with Tannoy on a number of projects, he knew that this relationship would prove fruitful for Y Ffwrnes. “I was quite determined about the combination of loudspeakers and amps to go with them. But with the speakers in particular, I wanted to get point source sound, very clear, distinctive and uncolored, and I wanted a modular system, which we got with Tannoy. “Tannoy then took the early

designs, all the plans and sections, and put them into EASE and came back with a component schedule to match the specification that I put forward.” “The project is a 500-seater auditorium main theatre, with a separate studio theatre space that can seat 100 people,” said David Turnbull, project manager for Northern Light, who was charged with installing the system. “The audio component is made up

entirely of Tannoy speakers. For the front system we have VQ 85DFs, supported by VQ MBs. We’ve got a delay line of VX 15Qs, and then side-fills throughout the auditorium of wall-mounted Di 8DCs. Down on the ground level you’ve got large- format VS 218 subs, supported by VX 12s to give some in-fill at the front of the auditorium.” Amplification is provided by 10

Lab.gruppen C Series amplifiers. “We got a great combination of components from Tannoy for the general loudspeaker rig,” said Baldwin. “There are also a number of other interesting areas which the company has been involved in, including the introduction of the artificial reverberation system, which we have done with ACS in Holland.” “The system is working at very

low level to enhance the natural acoustics of the space. Over the stage we have a set of acoustic reflectors, which have artificial lighting in them as well as loudspeakers. This allows the performers, who might be operating in concert mode onstage, to be part of the auditorium acoustic because we regenerate it over stage. But also, it allows us to give musicians on one side of the stage the ability to very clearly hear musicians on the other side, as we’re cross feeding it.” For the reverberation system, it

is a Tannoy solution that delivers this effect throughout the main auditorium, as Turnbull explains. “Fifty-six loudspeakers are located over and around the auditorium – these are independent from the main house system. Within that, we have 20 CMS 801DC ceiling mounts, 18 CMS 601DC ceiling mounts, and the Di 8DCs making up the balance of the equipment.” “The artificial reverberation system has got 18 mics over stage that go into the ACS processing unit and allows the user to call up a number of preset reverberation times. The hall has a

reverberation time of under 1 second, but this system allows the user to call up anything from 1.1 seconds to 2.7 seconds, and there’s a couple of extra ones in

A Tannoy solution was also chosen for the artificial reverberation system

there for special effects..” This added flexibility is just one

of the reasons that Y Ffwrnes is already becoming a jewel in the crown for the local area, as theatre

manager Carwyn Matera-Rogers testified: “Llanelli has been a thriving community and is becoming so once again.”n www.tannoypro.com
