New cabinets! But, sorry, they’re only for EML

By Marc Maes

EVENT COMPANY PRG’s open day at EML Production’s headquarters on 20 February provided an opportunity to show the complete EML speaker cabinet range, including a brand new array system. However, the compact three-way has been developed only for use by the Belgian rental giant. Since sound engineer Patrick Demoustier designed the first EML-EMT speaker cabinet 20 years ago, EML has continuously expanded its custom-made speaker range. HAD, HDP and EMW wedges were next, followed by EMT subs, EMS compact subwoofers, EMF compact speakers and the EMµ, the smallest system in the range. Since 1995, the manufacture of the wooden parts of the speaker cabinets has been handled by Belgian flightcase company K-Teg; loudspeaker drivers and woofers come from leading brands such as JBL or B&C for components. “As the biggest Adamson user

in Europe, it goes without saying that we buy recognised brands for the touring market,” explains Demoustier. “But by developing our own speaker range we can concentrate on quality, effectiveness and handling ability rather than marketing and popular features.” The new C-Type three-way

line array system was on display in February in a demo format, but will eventually replace the existing EML array, based on JBL HLA components.

“Where most other mini line arrays are only two-way, and therefore suffer from a lack of body and low end, the C-Type is very powerful in low frequency response,” explains Demoustier. After two years of discrete testing on several projects, the C-Type is nearly finished. The array has a fast, precise and simple rigging system, and EML has opted for Lab.gruppen PLM20000 amplifiers for power.

URBAN AUDIO Productions recently used Yamaha’s StageMix iPad app for a rooftop screening of The Dark Knight Rises for Virgin Movies’ launch in the capital. A helipad on top of the 18-storey building above east London’s Shoe Lane meant that no cover tent was permitted so the high-end audio provider used a Yamaha LS9 mixing desk controlled using the app alongside Nexo PS8, PS10 and LS400 loudspeakers.

“Both the LS9 and StageMix were rock steady throughout and provided all the functionality we needed to deliver high- quality audio in this unique environment,” explained Urban Audio director Dan Lewis.n
