CL Series spearheads “best year in last five” for Yamaha CA

The CL series, Yamaha Commercial Audio’s latest digital mixing system, was launched amid considerable fanfare at Prolight + Sound 2012. A year on, YCA is reaping the benefits, writes Dave Robinson

THE STATISTICS speak for themselves: 2012-13 was Yamaha Commercial Audio UK’s most successful year in the past five, with a 15% increase in sales over 2011-2012. The success of the CL series was key to these positive figures, says the company – though, the PM5D desk also saw a rise in demand during the period. Yamaha, like many businesses,

won’t release figures for units shipped. However, at Prolight + Sound 2012 Karl Christmas, YCA senior manager (UK) revealed that pre-orders for the CL5 had outstripped projections by 2:1 on the first day of the show alone. By the end of the show, more than 50 sales and rental companies had placed orders. Once all three CL series console models began shipping in significant quantities, the

orders began to ramp up and the figure is “still climbing fast”, says YCA. This has been boosted by the 2013 introduction of further Dante-ready Rio rack I/O units. The installation market has seen high demand for the CL series although, as Gianni Abruzzese, YCA sales manager (UK & ROI) points out, the nature of the business means that orders take longer to finalise. “With installation sales, companies invariably need to go through a tender process and more layers of paperwork than in the rental business, so it takes longer,” he notes. “But we have sold CL systems to a wide range of customers, including churches, live venues and theatres.” Examples include Slovak National Theatre, Bratislava; Bristol Old Vic theatre (UK); and Max Schmeling Halle, Berlin.

“The

broadcast industry has been

particularly keen on the CL3. It has a small footprint and sits nicely in an OB van, which is perfect for them.” Despite the CL success, sales

High demand for the CL series was key to the company’s growth

of an ‘old friend’ have increased too. “2012-13 saw the highest UK sales of PM5Ds in six years, thanks to a resurgence in the touring market,” says Christmas. “It’s also important to note

that the success hasn’t only been in the digital console market,” he continues. “Loudspeakers and power amplifiers make up a significant part of Yamaha

Commercial Audio’s turnover. There are thousands of them at work, but they are not often highlighted.”

“2012-13 has been a very important year for us,” says Nick Cook, European marketing director, Yamaha Commercial Audio Europe. “We are looking forward to 2013-14 being an even more positive year.”n www.yamahacommercialaudio.com
