UNITED KINGDOM SW19 goes live By Erica Basnicki
FORMER LIVE sound support company Capital Productions has been revived and rebranded as SW19. The company recently opened its brand new rehearsal complex in south London. The completed Studio One is
over 185sqm with 4.2m headroom, full acoustic treatment and windows on two sides allowing for plenty of natural light. A control room and production office as well as a separate lounge area are also available. The similarly- sized Studio Two will open in the near future. “We had in mind people
would be in there for several days, or even several weeks, so we’ve tried to make it
comfortable and functional for fairly long rehearsal periods,” said production manager Kevin Hopgood, who heads SW19 and has spent many years touring the globe to produce concerts for Kylie Minogue, Mark Knopfler and The War of the Worlds stage show. The rehearsal complex shares its HQ with close associate Capital Sound, and although the hire company’s audio inventory is available for SW19 clients to use, Hopgood notes that the two companies will operate separately from each other. “My view is that there needs to be a bit more independence there because it’s not always appropriate, necessarily,” said Hopgood. “If a management company or an artist has a really

long relationship with a particular audio company or lighting company or with any element of the production, we’ll take that on board. We’re not going to go in there and say ‘ok, what’s gone before is now ancient history.’” Other key members of
SW19’s production team are Charles (Charlie) Ellery and Lisa Santos Hannan. Ellery has won both the Operational Service
Medal and the Iraq Medal for his work on concert productions provided for the British Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan in active Operational Theatres. Hannan has worked on major music industry productions such as the MTV Awards, the BRIT Awards and Capital Radio’s Party-in- the-Park and is integral in providing administration and client support. n
