Great stereo: SGO Mistika’s stereo 3D tools and advanced metadata- based stereo workflow were used from start to finish onThe Great Gatsby, directed by Baz Luhrmann. Stereo 3D was used in the film as an effective device to connect the audience intimately to the action. The corrective stereo colour balancing was achieved using Mistika. Production company Bazmark Film III’s VFX department used Mistika on a daily basis for all of the RAW 5K stereo footage being shot on Red Epic-X cameras by director of Photography Simon Duggan ACS. The second Mistika system, supplied by Soundfirm Sydney, was used as a core piece of a DI pipeline. Bazmark installed a high speed data connection between the two buildings so that the Soundfirm Mistika could access the same media storage that was being used by the Bazmark VFX department, where all of the raw camera files were already available on spinning disks.

RTVE acquires Ikusnet codecs RTVE, the public Spanish Broadcasting Corporation, has installed two sets of Ikusnet video encoding equipment for its news department. Ikusnet codecs are used in the live transmission of prominent events such as the broadcast of the bull-running during San Fermin festivities, which took place last month in Pamplona. The codecs have 3G/4G communication modules and the ability to encode signals in SD and HD resolution. Ikusnet is claimed to be the only portable video codec in the market supporting bidirectional live video and audio/talkback streams all in one compact unit, with two switchable video inputs (two cameras-SDI/HDMI/Composite) and two monitor screens that allow the user to monitor video inputs, video feedback (cue programme) and the quality of locally encoded video.

Tweak RV to MPC Visual effects studio MPC has standardised on Tweak Software’s image and sequence viewer, RV, for playback and review across its feature film VFX facilities in Vancouver, Montréal, London and Bangalore. As early adopters, RV was first used at MPC in 2010, and is now fully integrated into its global pipeline, and has successfully streamlined VFX production on both 2D and stereo 3D films including Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Prometheus, Life of Pi, Skyfall, Fast & Furious 6, Man of Steel, World War Zand many more. “All of our films run through RV, and we’ve had a great experience with it since day one,” said Damien Fagnou, global head of Software at MPC. “We’re able to use RV very successfully across facilities and like the fact that it runs on Linux, Mac and Windows and supports all of the formats we use from EXR to Cineon, and it also supports a wide variety of LUTs.”

Base colour:Pacific Rim, directed by Guillermo del Toro, was post produced at Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging (MPI). Lead colourist Maxine Gervais used Baselight grading tools — on a laptop as well as a Baselight Eight system — to perfect the look of the movie, from set to final
deliverables.Pacific Rimwas shot in 4K on RED cameras for a 2K and 3D finish. Gervais fine-tuned the de-Bayering algorithms in Baselight before transferring them to Red Tools for bulk conversion. “I made sure I was using all the right colour curves, so I was sure where the DoP was going,” said Gervais.

Shotgun tracks for Despicable Me 2: Shotgun Software’s web-based production management platform, Shotgun, kept Paris-based animation studio Illumination Mac Guff on track for Despicable Me 2. “Shotgun also helps create a real synergy between artists, team leaders and producers. It centralises all data, which eliminates discrepancies between production reports, and makes it easy to arrange reports any way we need, with different levels of detail depending on scope,” said Etienne Pecheux, supervising technical director, Illumination Mac Guff. During production, each movie or frame sequence published on the internal asset manager was automatically transferred to Shotgun where the content could be viewed via Tweak Software’s RV playback and review system. Illumination Mac Guff also fed Shotgun statistics on render times, which helped detect abnormally long renders and anticipate a re-allocation of render power based on weekly quotas.
