50 TVBEurope IBC2013 Sneak Preview Clear-Com HelixNet gains ethernet networking By Will Strauss
CLEAR-COM HAS enhanced its HelixNet Partyline Intercom System so that stage managers, camera operators, lighting engineers or any other HelixNet users can remain connected to one another even when they are in disparate locations or separated by long distances. The new networking
capabilities, which will be on show for the first time at IBC2013, see ethernet and fibre
BiLi The sound of the future By Adrian Pennington Capturing La Traviata in UltraHD and immersive audio
A TABLET application, with 360° video synchronised with a 360° spatial sound over headphones, is one of the exciting audio developments demonstrated for the first time anywhere at the Future Zone. It has been devised by
collaborative project BiLi, dedicated to binaural listening, or ‘sound spatialisation over headphones’ which depends on head size and movement and other morphological parameters to offer a three- dimensional hearing experience. “We have enough processing
power in mobile devices to offer a headphone listening experience driven by binaural
Ericsson Enabling the video-networked society By Ian McMurray
DEMONSTRATING HOW the company believes it is transforming video delivery and enabling networks of all kinds to become video centric will be Ericsson. By the year 2020, Ericsson predicts that 15 billion video-enabled connected devices will transform video consumption and network needs as well as challenge the norms in the content value chain. This connectivity and evolution in the TV service towards all-screens, anytime will, says
the company, rely on pure and hybrid IP networks as the core enabler. Ericsson says that it is helping the industry to make the transition to a fully multiscreen world where IP video delivery is a unique, global enabler in the evolution of the TV experience. At IBC, the company will be highlighting how the increased demand from consumers for TV Anywhere, in tandem with the increasing proliferation of connected devices, has resulted in an explosion in data traffic over networks. Driven
principally by video, this is, according to Ericsson, proving to be a game changer within the market. “We are seeing global
deployments of high capacity, wireless LTE networks, ever more connected devices and use of IP networks, combined with broadcasting to drive a real evolution in the consumer service of TV,” said Simon Frost, head of TV Marketing, Ericsson. “The future of television will demand IP connectivity to enable the interaction, evolved discovery
and shift towards mobility as we unify the devices for the consumer. As video dominates the global and local networks like no other traffic, so operators and content owners have to collaborate and make these networks content aware and video optimised. Ericsson is uniquely placed at the convergence of media, telecoms and ICT, building solutions and managed services to enable all those in the content chain to evolve their strategies for success in the changing future.” 1.D61
synthesis,” explained Matthieu Parmentier, France Télévisions, Innovations & Dévelopements. “This means we can demonstrate how we can process the sound within the receiver to fool the listener’s brain and propose a
real sensation of sound sources coming from far left/right/up/ down/front/behind.” Also on show: a professional monitoring processor; a beta-version of Radio France’s multichannel audio website which will pick-up your
lines used to link multiple HelixNet systems, distributing digital partyline channels, programme audio feeds and auxiliary interfaced audio to all digital beltpack users. “This new capability means
that any of the possible dozens of HelixNet beltpack users can access any two of the available network partyline channels by simply selecting the desired channels on their beltpack,” explained Clear-Com director of Product Management, Simon Browne.
Let’s get this partyline started: Ethernet and fibre can now link crew members
source-assign equipment or rely on multiple power supply units.” The station-to-station
networking function is made possible with the new HLI-ET2 Ethernet Module. Working this way allows main stations to connect directly (or through a LAN) using standard IT switches. The Ethernet Module comes standard with two RJ-45 jacks. A new HLI-FBS Fibre Module
“Since all these channels are running off a single, shielded twisted-pair cable, users no
longer need to physically relocate multiple cables for new configurations, utilise expensive
listening preferences by choosing your head size, headphones brand and virtual room size; a beta plug-in that permits 360° audio panning, with binaural personalisation and technology for engineering multichannel audio over speakers and headphones at the same time. BiLi aims to offer a consumer technology for driving spatial audio over headphones in 2015 as well as to launch professional products for accurate spatial monitoring. Project partners include
France Télévisions, Radio France, research outfits IRCAM, LIMSI-CNRS and Orange Labs; Arkamys, Trinnov Audio and Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. It also shares learnings with UltraHD video project 4EVER. 8.F49
is also available for linking stations over long distances. 10.D29

Muira Suite is expanded
By Carolyn Giardina
BLM IS launching two new, browser-based interfaces to its product toolset, Miura ProductionWeb and Miura StoreFront. Miura ProductionWeb is a customisable production interface that provides access to BLM’s media management and video processing tools via the internet. That includes tools for production workflow management operations from ingest, through sub-clipping (partial restore) and fulfilment. “Miura ProductionWeb
really comes into its own when scaling up an operation to manage bursts in workload or extending geographic reach,” said BLM CEO Julian Wright. “Some content archives are
vast and it is simply impossible to fully catalogue the material with a team of in-house archivists,” Wright added. “The Miura ProductionWeb server allows private or public production clouds to be created, enabling secure decentralised operations. It utilises low bitrate reference browse media that allows frame-accurate, geographically distributed tasks to be carried out. This enables pioneering models such as crowd sourcing to be exploited to enrich the essence metadata.” Miura StoreFront is a portal
through which material can be searched, retrieved and purchased. Said Wright: “Miura StoreFront completes the picture for archive content owners by providing an online gallery for direct B2B or consumer syndication.” 7.J40
