TVBEurope 47 IBC2013 Sneak Preview Rohde & Schwarz DVS Support for XAVC 4K By Carolyn Giardina
ROHDE & SCHWARZ DVS will present numerous advancements to its studio broadcast and post production products at IBC, including support for Sony’s XAVC codec in DVS Venice and Clipster systems. XAVC is a Sony recording format that can accommodate 4K resolution at up to 60fps. DVS will also expand its studio
production line with a modular media asset management system. The Clipster DI workstation now supports AS-02 and IMF (Interoperable Master Format), in addition to XAVC. Clipster can create Interoperable Master Packages (IMPs), and the IMF Delivery Tool can be used to make multi-lingual versions. The SpycerBox storage system is now
available in version 4 with improved performance and new tools in the

Acoustical holodeck Pinguin
By Adrian Pennington
THE UPCOMING UHDTV standard is stimulating developments in new home audio technologies to keep pace with larger screens and higher resolution pictures. At the Future Zone, pro audio software manufacturer Master Pinguin is inviting IBC visitors to a special listening test, the feedback from which will help determine UHD TV proposals for new surround sound formats. The Hamburg-headquartered company is mounting an interactive immersive audio environment using a speaker layout between 5.1 and 22.2 with an optimised ‘grade-of-envelopment’. “We are inviting interested IBC visitors into this acoustical holodeck for

listening tests using new, innovative 3D audio technologies,” explained Pinguin owner, Ralph Kessler, also an EBU member of working group PLOUD. He describes these technologies as including “sophisticated environment simulations combining 3D noise with acoustical attributes or automatic format conversion.” The aim of the tests is to define
a new quality parameter called ‘depth of immersion’ to quantify the subjective perception of audio envelopment. Pinguin’s other R&D projects include customised EBU loudness logging and automatic dialogue enhancement technologies. 8.F41
Capturing the Cup: Sony cameras saw 4K action in Rio
Sony Shooting for a 4K goal By Adrian Pennington
SHARING LESSONS learned from its pioneering experiments in 4K live production this summer, Sony’s IBC presence plans to show how it is living up to the promise of a future ‘beyond definition’. Last month, Sony trialled a 4K
live production workflow at the Confederations Cup in Brazil, where it also provided 2D venue facilities, including systems integration services, event equipment and technical facilities and operations for host broadcaster HBS. The outcome of these tests is being
used by Sony and FIFA to determine to what extent a 4K production, or even live 4K broadcast, is possible at next year’s World Cup also in Brazil. Quad-HD signals were routed around a Sony-built Telegenic outside
broadcast truck from Sony F55 cine-style 35mm cameras fitted with zoom lens adapters (pictured). In addition, Sony was responsible
for shooting and recording part of this year’s Wimbledon Championships in 4K, in partnership with the All England Lawn and Tennis Club. “IBC2013 is a landmark event as it
offers us the opportunity to meet with many of our customers and debate the future of the broadcast industry,” said Olivier Bovis, head of AV Media, Sony Europe. “It gives us the chance to explain how we have overcome the challenges of filming some of the world’s largest events in 4K. We are always excited to meet with our customers and partners and listen to their feedback. It is only by working in such close collaboration that we can retain our position at the heart of the industry.” 12.A10
