“To get the benefits of this IP-connected flexible world, you need to accept that SDI must die” —Lewis Kirkaldie, Cinergy

The Telestream file format incorporates markers into the growing file which tells the encoders whether to work or not, in realtime. So the automation system can give frame-accurate instructions into the encoding farm. The result is that one of the

broadcaster’s most popular programmes, a daily live talk show broadcast from 18.30 to 20.30 with multiple commercial breaks, is available online as a single file by 21.00 every day without any human intervention. Alongside the live encoding the system also packages about 20 hours a day of pre-recorded content for VoD. The encoding

system also provides the resources for content ingest, again with the emphasis on speed. Lesoil quoted the example of a car show that shoots up to 19.00 on Friday night each week, including five GoPros as well as regular cameras. The whole lot is transcoded to DNX120 HD and checked in to Avid Interplay to start editing on Saturday morning. “There is a user interface for

Telestream Pipeline but we never use it,” Lesoil explained. “It has a REST web services API so it is easy to integrate. It means we can automate it, and use it to manage media exchange between Dalet, Avid, Omneon, Grass Valley K2 and the rest.” Taking away the

complexity of moving content around the system, he argued, allowed users to be more creative. Courting controversy, Lesoil

explained that Canal+ deployed a specific organisation for this project bringing closer together the heads of IT and broadcast engineering to ensure that the best products were powered by the best architecture. “We went deep into the system to implement REST APIs to ensure reliability,” he concluded. “When we had three months to make the channel work and vendors that do not want to talk to each other, we got Vantage to talk to each of their systems.”

Moving to a fully file-based core infrastructure at RTE: FAST — File-based Acquisition and Server Technology

By Fergal Ringrose

INTRODUCING THIS session, TMD chairman & CEO Tony Taylor said, “the one word that sums up this project from start to finish is collaboration. Try to bring everyone in — even if sometimes it is like herding cats! We saw collaboration at the outset and during the process, with professional

communication between all the parties involved — RTÉ, TMD, Eurotek and MJO Broadcast.” RTÉ project manager Myles

Donoghue said, “the first thing we had to do was convince the business to embark on this project. Could we prove what the efficiencies were going to be? So we decided to stick to what we’re good at in RTÉ, which is producing sound and pictures.”

Donoghue then showed an in- house video demonstrating the “chaotic” process by which tape is accessed, transported, copied, retransported, recopied and fought over by various RTÉ departments — promotions, library, traffic, subtitles, viewer, transmission — every time there is a request for content. As the voiceover told us, “the journey Continued on page 22

Using WHATS’On by

MediaGeniX for its end-to-end workflow meant that an asset could be followed from the beginning to the end through the whole lifecycle.

Integration with EVS did not exist so an EVS format was implemented. Similarly, integration from the MCR to retrieving exact time codes was not available so Pebble Beach API was put into place.

Esteban explained the workflow: “Content goes through a validation process. There is quality control of all the files we ar are going to broadcast and once validated it it is sent to MediaGeniX.

Automation looks for content. If the content is there it will playout at the right time. If content is in the SAN it will be automatically transferred to the EVS servers. In case it is not, there is another request to the archive. Content is then played out from the MCR.”

In conclusion, Esteban

explained that for sport there is a specific workflow for ingest, re-recording in a local version, fast content creation tools, reliability and scalability. “Choose the right partners

your business depends on it,” he exclaimed. “We have been working with MediaGeniX and EVS for more than six years. It’s not just about solutions but also about people. You need to know who to call and you need to trust the people.” Esteban also reiterated that training, operational support and workflow respect are critical.
