StreamUK powers TriCaster StreamUK used the NewTek TriCaster multi-camera production system to live stream ‘The Biggest Book Show On Earth’, a children’s online festival. Individuals, schools, libraries and bookshops around the world signed up to receive the free live webcast, and for the first time it was also streamed to 20 Picturehouse Cinemas, 10 Cineworld cinemas and seven independent cinemas in the UK. The event was interactive, with children able to ask live questions via the website. The set-up for the webcast included three Sony PMW-500 broadcast cameras, plus a Visualiser overhead camera set up above an illustrator’s table to capture live drawings being created as an author read a story. These feeds, and a separate audio feed, were vision-mixed on the TriCaster and then sent to their on-site encoders. One feed went online and another to StreamUK’s satellite truck to beam to the cinemas.

Ice whispering in Yakutia Fascinated by ‘ice whispering’, a phenomenon that occurs when people breathe and speak in extremely low temperatures, the artist Juergen Staack travelled to the world’s coldest inhabited place, Oymyakon, in the far east of Russia in 2012, accompanied by his artist colleague Thomas Neumann. The sound recordings that Staack brought back with him will be on display until 1 March in the exhibition entitled SAKHA at the Konrad Fischer Galerie in Berlin. On his acoustic hunt to record the rare phenomenon of ice
whispering — which the natives call ‘the whisper of the stars’ — Staack took along an MKH 8060 RF condenser microphone from Sennheiser as part of his equipment.

Thomson’s flying start Thomson Broadcast began the year strongly, with a major sales success coinciding with the finalisation of the company’s new financial and management structure. Now part of the Arelis Group, Thomson Broadcast will benefit from expanded R&D resources that will help the company spread development costs and get technologies to the market more rapidly. Completed in December 2012, the acquisition by the technology- focused Arelis Group brings secure long-term funding from a mixture of private venture capital and government sources, with senior management taking an ownership stake, under the leadership of group CEO Pascal Veillat. “The Thomson Broadcast brand continues unchanged, and our programme of new product launches continues through 2013,” said Veillat. “And we have got off to a great start in 2013 with a very large deal for a long-term broadcast infrastructure project.”
