Nova integrated high-def playout

Nova Greece playout solution involved a central routing core, channel branding, multiviewers and large displays for monitoring and control. Analysis by Conrad Preen, consultant to Nova

GREEK BROADCASTER Nova began life as a two- channel terrestrial operation. It grew incrementally into a multi- channel satellite broadcaster with 16, locally originated Greek-language film and sports channels, as well as Greek free- to-air channels. By 2008 — when the company

was bought by Greek ISP Forthnet — from a technology angle it had come to resemble a village of small TV stations. With HD requirements

knocking on its door and a need to use staff more efficiently, it was clearly time for a change to an integrated, multi-channel playout operation. Nova was the first digital,

satellite pay-TV platform in Greece, broadcasting 24 locally- originated Greek-language film, sports and free-to-air channels, three own-produced HD channels and the only available 3D service across Greece. Nova is part of Forthnet Group, the largest privately owned group of

companies providing broadband and pay-TV services to more than 750,000 households across Greece and Cyprus. The unique challenge Nova faced came from the sports channels. Nova broadcasts a large amount of live sports content that is then repeated. During live events a channel needs the full time attention of an operator. The rest of the time it’s like a thematic channel and a single operator can happily monitor several of them concurrently.

Nova required a main control

room (MCR) where one or two operators could monitor the channel output but with the ability to assign channels to smaller live booths for individual operation during live events. This required a fresh approach to control and monitoring, needing a high level of flexibility but without massive complexity. Nova also didn’t want to be locked into an all-in-one solution — modularity was essential with each component in the playout chain being a standard piece of technology that could be obtained from several suppliers. The overall playout solution involved a central routing core,

channel branding, multiviewers and large displays for monitoring and control systems. The winning bid came from local integrator Telmaco, who offered a package from Miranda comprising an NVision router, Imagestore IS750 channel branding and the KX-16
