BBC Studios and Post Production has opened a brand new facility at Charlotte Street in central London. Jake Young went along to look at the post house
BBC STUDIOS and Post Production (BBC S&PP) opened its standalone post production facility on Charlotte Street on 28 January 2013. Located in the heart of London’s vibrant W1 post community, the new HD- based, fully tapeless facility gives BBC S&PP a central London launch-pad to offer full-service post production facilities to TV and corporate clients.
The six-floor facility was
Charlotte Forde and Steve Kruger outside BBC S&PP’s new building in central London. The six-floor facility was formerly home to Editworks
formerly home to Editworks, which re-launched at Evolutions’ Berners Street headquarters in September 2012. The post house has been renovated throughout and BBC S&PP has reshaped the ground floor and basement to make the building work harder, but also to enable the company to service more clients. The basement has been gutted, with six cutting rooms built, all with windows.
Third floor suite: all of the kit came from Television Centre, now vacated
The facility houses nine Avid Media Composer offline suites; nine Avid Symphony Nitris DX finishing suites; a Pro Tools 5.1 audio suite and voiceover booth on the fourth floor; and an Autodesk Smoke, Flame and Lustre visual effects and grading system. All of the kit came from Television Centre, which BBC S&PP has vacated. The post house is linked to BBC S&PP’s studios at BBC
Elstree and Elstree Studios so it can directly serve live studio productions that require inserts. “Essentially Elstree’s our hub of all connectivity,” says Charlotte Forde, commercial manager at BBC S&PP. “Because it’s a business network of so many sites [Elstree, Ruislip, Charlotte Street and Bristol] we have one central focus, so everything stems from there and then feeds us.”
At the moment, BBC S&PP has a 1Gb fibre between Charlotte Street and BBC Elstree and a Geo Networks dark fibre between BBC Elstree and Elstree Studios. “We can put suites at either location,” says Steve Kruger, post production manager. “We also have the ability to play baseband video in both directions. Anything happening at a studio in Elstree we can live capture here, and then afterwards we can bring all the ISOs in.” The third floor is one of
Charlotte Street’s online areas. It comprises well-built, spacious suites and overspill
