right; eat some greens every day. Do you buy your spinach and lettuce in a bag or plastic container? What do you think happens to that plastic after you eat your salad? Remember that plastic bag or container is made from petroleum, the same petroleum fossil fuel which is causing wars between political leaders and battles over land ownership. Do more for yourself than cut off the top of a plastic bag, dump some lettuce on your plate, add salad dressing and call it a meal. The next time you make a salad use some lettuce that isn’t packaged in plastic. Instead of prewashed baby carrots sold in a plastic bag get out your veggie peeler and get to know your produce. Buy some locally-grown greens which have never been near a factory or packaging plant. Collard greens, kale, mustard greens, all types of cabbages, kohlrabi, caulifl ower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, parsley, carrots, spinach, turnips, all types of radishes, parsnips, rutabagas, beets, Swiss chard and all types of lettuces are in season this month.
Fruits
Most of the fruits we have access to in the stores are shipped in from other countries. They have been picked green (unripe) rather than fully maturing on the
tree, bush or vine. Green fruits are still fi rm; they don’t bruise in transport. Fruits such as bananas are
GENETICALLY- MODIFIED FOOD
The current Genetically-Modified (GM, also called transgenic) foods are corn (not popcorn), soy, canola oil, cottonseed oil, sugar beets for sugar, Chinese and Hawaiian papaya, alfalfa for hay, zucchini and yellow squash.
GM corn, sugar beets canola oil and soy show up in many boxed or packaged “foods.” GM soy and corn are used as feed for livestock, poultry and farm-raised fi sh. This translates to meat, eggs and dairy containing GM constituents. Other sources of GM contamination are dairy products from cows injected with rbGH, food additives, enzymes, NutraSweet, rennet, honey and bee pollen that has been contaminated by GM pollen. GMOs are not allowed in USDA Certifi ed Organic Foods. Buy ORGANIC! Download the Non-GMO Shopping Guide online. Browse Google.
