& Priyamvada Sankar, senior disciples of T. Balasaraswati, will perform Classical Indian Dance. Bharata Natyam, the most popular, was born in the innermost sanctum of the Hindu temples as part of the rituals and offerings to the deity of the temple. Indigenous to southern India, it is traditionally performed by a solo dancer. There are two main aspects of the Bharata Natyam form. The fi rst: the percussive, rhythmic dance technique, which incorporates complex footwork and decorative hand gestures performed to spoken rhythmic syllables. The second: its expressive storytelling called “abhinaya,” which uses hand gestures, facial expression, mime and body positions to create the mood and convey the ideas set forth in the poetic text.
