The Greater London region was delighted to learn that Kevin Snowden of NES Electrical – also Croydon branch chairman and regional executive committee member – was one of the lucky prize draw winners selected after completing ‘The Big

Survey’ – the ECA’s recent wide-ranging research initiative. The IPad2 prize was presented to Kevin at the Greater London

regional executive meeting by Stefan Hay, the head of FSA and Marketing at the ECA. ‘I am somewhat surprised but thrilled to receive this prize and I

will make very good use of it,’ said Kevin. The Big Survey was an online questionnaire that sought the

views of ECA members on services and how they use them. On completing The Big Survey, members had the chance to enter a prize draw to win one of the popular Apple tablet devices.

Career opportunities

It’s never too late to upskill, and Clint Cottee, qualifying supervisor of M.A. Broughton Electrical Contractors, saw the value in taking a hold of the development opportunities available. The Contract Management (HNC) course he took, run by Carnegie College Dunfermline, was a specifi c course covered by the ECA Training Fund. This was completed over a two-year period, after which he was eligible to take the CMI Executive Diploma in Management. ‘The course has helped me tremendously,’ said Clint. ‘I now

have the confi dence to get more involved, not just in the project management side of the business, but also the strategy of the business. The course has also given me the confi dence to help others, through mentoring employees with NVQs, City & Guilds 2391 and 17th Edition upgrade courses, empowering others to become successful.’ Now the proud holder of a CMI Executive Diploma in

Congratulations to Lizzie Philips, business development executive for Greater London ECA member Cavendish Engineers. Lizzie took part in the Paralympics opening ceremony on Wednesday 29 August, which had a 60,000-strong stadium audience and

was broadcast to more than one billion people worldwide. Lizzie racked up more than 150 hours of dance rehearsals to

prepare for the ceremony. She was invited to be part of the cast for both the opening prologue scene and the fi nale, and she participated in the spectacular ‘Big Bang’ space sequence, umbrella dance and Union Flag formation. ‘It was an exhilarating experience,’ said Lizzie. ‘As our work

involves working with the space industry, it was doubly exciting – but a little frustrating that I couldn’t share it with anyone at work.’

of the specialist fi re and emergency lighting systems company, which is based in Morley, Leeds. He was presented with his iPad prize by North East regional

Clint Cottee –grateful for ECA support

Management, Clint is also entitled to be graded as a Chartered Manager. He has applied to the Chartered Management Institute and is undergoing a grading process, where his management experience and qualifi cations are being assessed. Clint’s end-goal is to be managing director of a company. ‘The ECA funding gave me an opportunity to further my career within an industry struggling through a recession,’ said Clint. ‘Being given an opportunity to grow and to help others to grow means so much to me, and also provides the electrical industry with future growth. I hope my success gives others confi dence to take funding opportunities and make the most of our industry.’ Clint is grateful to company director Mark Broughton for all his support and for putting up with ‘endless questioning’. He also wants to thank the ECA committee. Clint said: ‘Without their support, none of this could have happened.’
