Manufacturers of these products are posting some
impressive growth figures. Paul Dawson, commercial director at Scolmore, comments: ‘My experience from Scolmore’s business is that decorative products equate to around 20 per cent of our overall wiring accessories sales.’
Closer to home The emphasis with switches and sockets has traditionally been put on safety, with ease of installation an additional major factor in selection and specification. In the past, little attention was paid to aesthetics, but now many homeowners want products that enhance the feeling of quality and colour coordination. Among the trends are moves towards accessories
when times are hard any expenditure can seem an indulgence. However, recent research from Everest suggests that, on average, homeowners in the UK each spent £2,057 on home improvements in the last 12 months alone.
Market forces For the electrical sector, the insatiable appetite for the latest trends in home décor can only be good news, and one of the sectors that is benefiting from it most is decorative wiring accessories. Detailing is becoming critical in properties of all shapes and sizes, and this means that electrical accessories are no longer thought of as utilitarian commodities whose only role is to deliver power and control to where it’s needed. The industry standard white thermoplastic sockets and switches are not enough for this increasingly demanding market. It’s a massive sector – and one that is only getting
bigger. Jason Ng, marketing communications specialist at MK Electric, explains: ‘We estimate that globally, the top end of the wiring accessories market is now worth $320m – more than a third of total wiring accessories sales. It is also the fastest growing, with sales over the next five years set to increase up to 15 per cent.’
