Elizabeth Harris visits Champneys Boot Camp to discover the fitness tools required to pave the way to a healthier New Year

riday morning and I arrived at Champney Springs with my running trainers on and my sports bag in hand ready for the unexpected. Boot camp!
When I heard the term I envisioned a group of middle-aged fitness candidates being lectured on the importance of a daily jog and eating your five-a-day….. I was wrong. I then imagined the other extreme with our luggage being searched for secret carbohydrates and some ex-military fitness fanatic pushing us to physical exhaustion. Again, I was wrong. As a trainee doctor I was certain I knew plenty about nutrition and exercise and it was only a matter of will power that stood between my beach body and me. Wrong.
We started with measurements. My height,
weight, body fat percentage and lung function were all calculated. Don’t panic, it is done privately and I found it really useful as it provided a clear picture of my starting point,

a guide to a realistic target and a means to measure progress along the way. Next, lunch. All the meals are designed by a Champneys Nutritionist to ensure that you are getting the right amount of both macronutrients and micronutrients from your food. When I saw the portion size I was pleasantly surprised. It makes perfect sense that if you are eating healthier foods tehn you can generally have more of them! So with our first healthy lunch consumed it was time for some serious exercise.
Power walks, circuits, Pilates, Tai Chi, strength
training, gym sessions, even fitness hula-hooping (no, I hadn’t heard of it either). Name any fat burning, sweat inducing exercise and boot camp does it. Never again will I underestimate aqua aerobics. I had the preconception that aqua aerobics was designed for the less athletic to make a few splashes and feel good about themselves by labeling it as exercise ..how foolish of me. I spent the next hour fighting
