Waterfront looks at the KiFit arm band, a device that makes keeping fi t just that simple
We all know that a healthy lifestyle is the end product of sensible eating, an eff ective exercise programme and adequate sleeping patterns. Yet how we go about encompassing these principles into our everyday life is where most, myself included, fall down. It would be ideal to have a nutritionist
and personal trainer on speed dial but in reality, an impractical option. Or a few days at a Champney’s Boot Camp may provide a the kick-start we need to get going but for the periods in-between we need some form of monitoring to ensure we are hitting our fi tness goals.
T is is where the KiFit Armband comes into play. It is a sophisticated device that you
can wear inconspicuously under your clothes and it monitors every parameter you need to know. Without delving into the underlying science, KiFit is able to calculate your daily physical activity levels, steps taken, nutritional value of your diet, calorie consumption and expenditure and sleep quality. How does it do this? Well, for the technically minded amongst you, the KiFit is a multi-sensor armband that collects 5000 data points per minute and collates information through an in-built heart rate monitor, pedometer, sweat meter, electrical nerve stimulation and posture sensing.
Why would you want to know all this? Well, the way I picture
it, if your car was not as effi cient as it could be then you would identify exactly which part was defective and concentrate on fi xing it in the hope the whole car would run smoother & faster, for longer. A more eff ective approach than servicing the whole vehicle. T e same applies to our health. T e body is a complex system and knowing exactly where your pitfalls are and focusing on those areas will not only save you time but also help you to see results more quickly. So you wear your KiFit Armband for the day and this will collate all the required information for review and change.
How do I measure my progress? You can enter individualized health targets into your activity manager
and over a time that you wish to achieve them. T e software will then calculate your daily calorie allowance, physical activity and steps required to stay on course for those particular goals. You don’t even have to wear your KiFit everyday you can simply wear it for a short period and then send it off to the KiFit team of physicians who are trained to analyze the data. After the results have been carefully assessed the wearer can choose to have a written or verbal consultation with a personal trainer to decipher the next stage in their health plan.
