The retired space shuttle Endeavour gently made its way through the streets of Los Angeles recently, on its way to its new home at a local museum. And its fi rst scheduled stop? A shopping centre car park in town. Endeavour nosed out of Los Angeles International Airport before dawn to begin a two- day, 12-mile journey atop a massive wheeled transporter to the California Science Center on the edge of the city. A few hundred spectators gathered at the car park to marvel at the shuttle, before it resumed its journey through the city.
Having arrived at the airport aboard a specially-equipped Boeing 747, Endeavour was placed on a 160-wheeled carrier for its trip across Los Angeles, which was guided by remote control. After an early bumpy ride, it was backed into a shopping

centre car park in the city’s Westchester neighbourhood as crowds cheered.
Crews later spent hours transferring the shuttle to a special, lighter towing dolly in order to cross a bridge over the Interstate 405 highway. It was then pulled across by a pickup truck.
When the journey resumed, the operators found themselves up against trees, despite the advance removal of 400 along the route.
Most of the problem trees could not be cut down because they were old or were treasured for other reasons – some had been planted in honour of Martin Luther King. The shuttle, which fl ew from 1992 to 2011, is set to become a tourist attraction at the centre. Endeavour was largely built in California and was a workhorse of the US space programme, fl ying a total 25 missions.
