The annual party conferences gave the BPA the chance to air its views in front of plenty of infl uential people, says BPA chief executive Patrick Troy – to good effect

The BPA was present at all three events, seizing the opportunity to infl uence policy and to encourage debate on issues important to the parking profession. We organised fringe events at all three conferences on the issue of how

parking policy can help struggling town centres in the UK recover from the recession.


The focus was around the Mary Portas recommendation for car parking to be free, which – I am pleased to say – was seen as a much too simplistic solution by all those who contributed to the debate.

Thank you to the council members who


participated in and chaired the debates. The events are aimed at giving the parking profession a higher profi le among politicians and stakeholders, as well as key party workers, and they enhance our ability to infl uence and inform


The BPA seized the opportunity


to infl uence policy and to encourage debate on important parking issues


government thinking. It also informs others about what we are trying to achieve as a profession in raising standards across our sector. The recent


establishment of an


appeals service (POPLA) for the private parking sector is a demonstration of that commitment.


I am sure that fact was not lost on the many people we have spoken to and sought to infl uence during these last few weeks.
