Motorists parking illegally on the streets of Moscow stand a far greater chance of being caught and fi ned after the city administration bolstered its enforcement regime.
Cameras are the main means of enforcement for police in the Russian capital, with more than 450 cameras expected to be in place by the end of the year, but the number of Parkons (parking patrols) will also double to 70. In addition to the static
cameras, the city’s administration is also introducing up to 100 cars equipped with a computerised surveillance system. These cars will patrol the areas where illegal parking is most prevalent in both the city and the suburbs. The main traffi c violations, besides parking, are drivers travelling in oncoming traffi c lanes. Authorities are already experiencing a tenfold increase in the number of motorists who have received parking fi nes.
