SAFER PARKING SCHEME

MIDLAND MELANGE

A NEW DEGREE OF SAFETY

Cambridge City Council has been awarded several Park Mark awards for its parking facilities.

The council has invested greatly in the facilities to improve their standards and reduce crime. The effort has paid off, with a very low number of crime incidents since the improvements took place. Sean Cleary, operations manager for the council, said: ‘We are delighted that these car parks have reached the standards required by the Park Mark scheme, as this means they are now delivering safer parking for our car parks’ visitors. ‘We have invested substantial time

and effort in enhancing our management processes and made changes in areas we felt would deter criminal activity and anti- social behaviour. ‘Particular areas of improvement have been the ability to monitor CCTV cameras from the new car park operations room, which is located at the Grand Arcade multi- storey car park, allowing staff to respond quickly to any type of event. ‘We also have a strong and flexible working relationship with our out-of-hours security company, Command Securities, which enhances the safe environment within our car parks.’

Parking facilities in the Midlands have scooped a trio of awards. Arena Shopping Park in Coventry, which houses one of the largest Tesco stores in Europe, has been awarded the Park Mark status for another year. The shopping park is located next to Coventry City FC’s football stadium, the Ricoh Arena.

Users of the Grantham and District Hospital in Lincolnshire will be pleased to hear that the hospital has recently been awarded Park Mark status for its parking facilities. New to the Safer Parking Scheme, the facility is run by Total Parking Solutions on behalf of the hospital. The company has also brought other hospital car parking facilities under their control, Pilgrim Hospital Boston and Lincoln Hospital – all part of the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust – up to Park Mark status.

Meanwhile, Ironbridge Park and Ride is a new addition to Telford and Wrekin Council’s Park Mark portfolio. The council runs a number of car parks that have already achieved Park Mark status.

TOTTENHAM HITS THE MARK

Shoppers will be pleased to know the car park at Tottenham Hale Retail Park continues to hold the Park Mark award.

Car park operators, AEJ Management, together with the owners, have worked with police and the Safer Parking Scheme to put in place measures that will help deter crime and reduce the fear of crime. Shopping park manager, Coila MacDonald, said: ‘I’m delighted that Tottenham Hale Retail Park has been recognised as a safe location. The 24 stores and restaurants at the retail park offer a wide choice of goods to more than 2.5 million customers each year, and it’s important that visitors can enjoy a safe shopping experience when visiting.’ Chief inspector Mark Long gave advice

to drivers to further improve their safety when leaving their cars. ‘This is an excellent achievement,’ he said. ‘The management of the retail park has worked hard to ensure that their car park meets the very high standards that must be in place to be awarded Park

Mark certification, not only to help to reduce crime but also help to reduce the fear of crime. Drivers can further reduce their chances of becoming a victim of car crime by ensuring that cars are left secure at all times and that valuables are never left inside.’
