GERMANY XLC, XLE and COBRA at Challenge-Roth By Erica Basnicki
OVER 200,000 spectators gathered in July to watch a record 5,000 athletes compete in Challenge-Roth, a long- distance triathlon in Roth, Germany, comprising a 3.8km (2.4 mile) swim followed by 180km on the bike and a full 42.2km marathon. For the fourth year in a row, sound production was
entrusted to Nuremberg-based Barowski AG, which opted for systems from Dynacord and Electro-Voice. The start of the swimming leg
featured a variety of EV elements: 12 XLC 127DVX line array elements, 12 XLE 181 cabinets, two XI2123 speakers, six V17 bass cabinets, and three N8000 system controllers. Dynacord’s Cobra system provided the sound
reinforcement in the market square, and comprised four Cobra FAR cabinets, four Cobra TOP elements, 12 Cobra PWH bass arrays, one N8000 and 10 CP3000S amplifiers. Course-side at the cycling
stage featured an Electro-Voice XLD system. “We had, in all, 26 XLD291 and XLD281 enclosures concatenated to form line arrays,” explained Barowski AG’s Michael
Barowski, “but to cover the entire stretch, we had to hoist them 18m into the air using a crane.” These were supported by six XS-212 subwoofers and four Dx46 sound system processors as well as eight CP3000S and six CP400S power amplifiers. n www.dynacord.comwww.electrovoice.com

AED Rent’s Glenn Roggeman (left) collects an Olympic relay torch donated by Robe
In 1979, he founded Meyer Sound Laboratories with his wife Helen, building the company into an iconic brand in the pro-audio market. Candidates for the award this
year included Nick Archdale (Flying Pig Systems/Carallon), Chris Cronin (Total Solutions Group), Dr Christian Heil (L-Acoustics) and Wayne Howell (Artistic Licence). Another special PLASA
‘award’ winner was AED Group CEO Glenn Roggeman, who was the highest bidder in a charity auction for an official torch from the London 2012 Olympic relay. Donated by Czech moving light manufacturer Robe, the torch
raised £6,200 (€7,777) for industry charity Light Relief. The torch will be displayed at the AED headquarters’ entrance in Willebroek, Belgium. The company supplied Delta Sound with additional L-Acoustics components to be used for the largest Olympic PA system in the history of the Games. “I am proud to contribute to the legacy of the ancient Olympic spirit which has only one goal: to bring humanity together,” said Roggeman. “More than ever there is a need for common goals in our industry. Let this torch be the token of our mutual goals and a beacon for a prosperous future.”n www.plasashow.com
