NET sponsors search for best young installer

Olympic bronze for Robbie

WHILE OLYMPIC FEVER SWEPT THE WHOLE NATION THIS SUMMER, ELECSA had particular cause for celebration, as one of its technical assessors, Cambridge-based Tony Grabarz, is the very proud father of Robbie Grabarz – winner of the bronze medal for Team GB in the men’s high jump. At London 2012, Robbie cleared 2.29 metres but couldn’t manage 2.33 metres, which left him in third place to take the Olympic bronze. He shared third place with Derek Drouin of Canada and Mutaz Barshim of Qatar. The gold was won by the Russian Ivan Ukhov, who jumped 2.38 metres. Tony Grabarz says of his son: ‘It was an outstanding result for Robbie and we’re totally thrilled for him. He jumped higher in Germany and New York earlier this year, so we look forward to what he can achieve in Rio in 2016.’

TRAINING CHARITY NATIONAL Electrotechnical Training (NET) is supporting SummitSkills’ search for the UK’s best young electrical engineer, as the industry’s most talented young installers pit their skills against each other in the 2012 SkillELECTRIC competition. The premier skills competition in the industry calendar, SkillELECTRIC tests competitors’ performance in tasks drawn from the role of the electrician in an intensive series of practical tests based on real-life work. The winner could have the opportunity to travel to Germany next year to represent the UK in the international WorldSkills competition.

Stephen Plant, NET

business development manager, commented: ‘SkillELECTRIC is

a fantastic opportunity for our best under-25s to show off their skills, and NET is delighted to be involved with the competition. These individuals have to demonstrate the highest level of ability and competence. We hope others will draw inspiration from these competitors, and take home a fi rm understanding of why we must be proud to maintain such a high skill level.’ Following a series of regional heats, the industry is gearing up for the fi nal, which will be held at the new vocational skills showcase, The Skills Show, taking place at the NEC in Birmingham on 15-17 November. Some 500 young people from around the world are expected to compete in 45 vocational skills contests.
