Alan Thompson, ECA past president and retired electrical contractor, recently starred in a two-part documentary on BBC1. The programme, The Town That Never Retires, was presented by Margaret Mountford and Nick Hewer from The Apprentice, and a number of over-65s were fi lmed for the show as they returned to work for two weeks. In episode one, Alan worked as an electrician on a building site. A clip of Alan getting back to work under poor weather conditions can be found on the BBC website titled: Retired builders are sent back to work on a stormy day.

In our regional news section we report on local stories sent to us from the ECA regions. And, if you’d like your items to appear in the next issue, we’d be delighted to hear from you...

Regional manager scales new heights

North West regional manager Tony Cooke recently joined his daughter, Kate, in a charity abseil for multiple slerosis (MS) research. Kate was diagnosed with MS six years ago, but hasn’t let the disease get in the way of living a fulfi lling life. Despite suffering from chronic vertigo, Kate and her father bravely scaled the 27-metre- tall Leasowe Lighthouse in Moreton, Wirral.

Sports day

A combined sporting day was recently held by the Norfolk and Waveney and Ipswich branches. Around 50 members, with their clients, enjoyed a sunshine-fi lled day of shooting, fi shing and golf. This annual event took place at the High Lodge Leisure near Saxmundham. Once again, the ECA are delighted with the support from members and their clients, and are grateful for the attendance and sponsorship of MK Electric, Schneider Electric, Medlock Electrical, Alan Boswell Insurance and Edmundson Electrical. The chairman added: ‘It was great to see friends new and old at this fun event.’.

A charity auction was also held by the region, and between both events, nearly £1,500 was raised. The funds will be given to the Myelin Repair Research Unit at Cambridge University, where Kate believes Professor Robin Franklin is close to making a breakthrough. Many ECA members gave generously to this important cause, and the auction’s prizes were kindly donated by Edmundson Electrical and Newey & Eyre.
