ACI issues cable warning
THE APPROVED CABLES INITIATIVE (ACI) has issued details of a quality problem found in armoured cables manufactured by Demes Kablo of Turkey. Further investigations and testing have revealed problems with the zinc coating on steel armour wire in certain batches of small armoured cables produced by the manufacturer. A UK customer alerted the ACI to its fears about this cable in June and the ACI now understands that following an investigation by British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC), affected cable could date back to 2010. The armoured cable, which has BASEC approval, is now subject
to wider checks by the manufacturer, and although it knows the cause of the problem, the ACI is advising contractors to remain vigilant and to follow its advice on purchasing cable. Peter Smeeth, spokesperson for the ACI, said: ‘We have concerns with the timescales involved here as the manufacturer carries out further tests to verify the scale of the problem. In the meantime we are advising contractors who have purchased armoured cables from Demes Kablo of Turkey in the past two years to contact their supplier or the manufacturer to ensure the batch of cable is not one of those at risk.’
Megger makes PAT testing even faster
PROFESSIONAL PAT TESTERS IN Megger’s popular PAT400 range are now even faster and more convenient to use, thanks to new features that include auto-incrementing of asset numbers, a new timesaving expert mode, and facilities for automatically adding a company name to barcode labels. The additional features are provided by enhanced fi rmware that is included as standard in all instruments currently being supplied, and which is also available as a free download for existing registered users of PAT400 instruments. Megger’s marketing communications manager, Mark Johnson, said: ‘For many users, particularly independent providers of PAT testing services, printing their
company name and/or contact details on the barcode labels is a invaluable option as it provides publicity and helps with business retention. With the new fi rmware upgrade, users can now choose to include on the labels either their own company details, or the details of the client and location.’
