Show time in the East

The Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire branch recently attended the Hertfordshire Show, taking a stand to promote the importance of electrical safety and the ECA. Aurora, a global manufacturer of LED products, supported the event with their lighting product demonstration vehicle, and Enfi eld Electrical Supplies provided equipment. While the weather was damp and sometimes wet, the turnout and support of branch members was great to see. Branch chairman Guy Taylor wants to thank the sponsors and members for supporting the initiative and working so hard to make it happen.

100 years and still going strong

While this year is a special one for the whole of Britain, from the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee to the Olympics, it is also a special year for R B Emerson, with the company celebrating its centenary. Founded in 1912 by Roland Basham Emerson, the company has developed a strong tradition and reputation for undertaking electrical work in schools, a practice which continues today, and has since moved forward into IT data wiring, installations and commercial contract work. R B Emerson became a member of the ECA in 1958. ‘The last 100 years of success has been achieved as a result of our employees’ dedication and commitment to providing a quality product for our clients,’ said R B Emerson MD, Andrew Casey. ‘The company’s ethos of providing training and apprenticeships aids this approach and provides the skills required in today’s changing market. We will continue to follow these core values that have delivered such success.’

Three main events have been scheduled to celebrate this centenary. The fi rst event, a day out at the Sandown races, took place in March and, despite the wet weather, the enthusiastic race-goers had a great time and enjoyed a lovely meal. The second celebratory event, a Summer Fayre, was recently held at the grounds

Branching out in the East Midlands

Ten years ago in November 2002, the ECA donated funding for some 500 trees to The National Forest, which were planted at Willesley Wood near Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire. The idea was put forward by the East Midlands regional executive committee to celebrate the ECA’s centenary in 2001. On a very wet Monday in July this year, ECA East Midlands regional manager Chris Harvey and Carol Rowntree Jones from the National Forest Company visited the original site, which has been completely transformed, with the young trees now over two metres tall in full leaf.

‘When we planted the saplings in 2002, the site was a muddy fi eld, but now it is a young plantation, an integral part of The National Forest and a permanent benefi t for the whole community,’ said Chris. ‘We thank the ECA for its involvement, which along with many different landowners, partners, groups and communities, helps us create The National Forest,’ said Carol. ‘The ECA has shown a keen interest in the progress of the trees, and to revisit the site together 10 years later and to see it looking so beautiful was a great pleasure.’
