New tax help and e-learning tools HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has partnered with the ECA to help provide simple assistance on tax matters for ECA SMEs. The ECA website now has a handy tax widget, featuring basic tax guides for small business in written and video format, and all the latest tax news, frequently updated. The widget also enables users to download a smartphone app for mobile record-keeping, designed for small businesses that are under the VAT threshold. Try the HMRC/ECA e-learning

M99 Introduction to Electrical Quantity Surveying – 2 days New Bury St Edmunds – October. Newbury, Lymm and Loughborough – November. A two-day course to provide contractors with the legal principles surrounding variations, setting out the rules for valuing variations, including basic principles of measurement.


T67 Safe Systems of Work and Safe Isolation – 1 day New


Sevenoaks and Loughborough – October. Newbury and Bury St Edmunds – November. Learn to safely and competently isolate and reverse-isolate low voltage electrical installations components and equipment, in line with company safe working procedures.


HS27 IOSH Managing Safely in Construction – 1 day a week for 4 weeks Newbury – October. Romford – November. The industry-recognised management-level course approved by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), designed to enable construction managers to manage site health and safety effectively. Approved by the UK Contractors’ Group (UKCG).


High growth, low carbon business opportunities: free workshops for SMEs in the south east of England


ECA and FLASH+ The ECA is working with FLASH+, an EU-funded initiative providing free workshops to help small to medium-sized enterprises in the south east of England benefi t from high growth, low carbon business opportunities.


The ECA has two FLASH+ one-day workshops, led by industry specialists, running in Reading this October. They are completely free for participants of eligible* companies in the south east who sign up to attend both:  Energy Effective & LED Lighting (EV0)  Marketing your Business and Green Credentials (M10)

Kristina Allison has a great deal of experience delivering energy effective lighting training for the ECA, the Carbon Trust, City University, London and others; she also provides lighting consultancy. She has recently developed a distance learning energy effective lighting qualifi cation with LSBU.


Chartered marketer Dee Blick specialises in providing practical marketing wisdom to SMEs. She has won awards for her marketing techniques and also writes marketing advice for a number of publications. She is the author of Amazon top seller The Ultimate Small Business Marketing Book.
