GIANTS IN SCREENING PROFILE
The Chinese government, on 7 December 2002, issued a report which blamed the crash on a fire started intentionally by passenger Zhang Pilin. Zhang had purchased seven flight insurance policies, at six different insurance agencies, with a total value of about 1.4 million RMB (approx. US $220,000) prior to boarding the flight. Some rumours indicated that Zhang was a terminally ill cancer patient and he had been living with a huge debt; there has been no official confirmation of these rumours. Zhang had taken gasoline onto the flight, concealed within his carry- on baggage. However, that was not the first time liquids had been taken onto aircraft in order to be used in a destructive attack. In 1993, Nanjing Airport prevented the hijacking of an aircraft to Taiwan; on that occasion a security inspector found three plastic mineral water bottles and one glass bottle filled with gasoline, along with detonators, explosives and other dangerous goods in a passenger’s carry-on baggage. In Zhang’s case, it was his intent to crash the aircraft and

As a result, the CAAC has since issued at least five notices strengthening the restrictions on passengers carrying liquids aboard flights : each passenger can now only carry up to two bottles (each bottles volume not exceeding 500ml); liquid items cannot be taken aboard unless they are opened for inspection and their contents confirmed; and excess liquids shall be checked in. Nobody survived in the 2002 incident, and therefore there is no way of knowing the details about how the crewmembers handled the scene. What we do know is that the pilot, before the aircraft finally crashed, reported "fire set in rear cabin”, and over the course of the next ten minutes, the crewmembers failed to control the frightened passengers who all flocked towards the front of the cabin resulting in the aircraft crashing into the sea due to its imbalance.
