NEWS NETHERLANDS Smart Building Conference for ISE 2013

Integrated Systems Events has revealed plans for the 2013 edition of the Integrated Systems Europe tradeshow, writes Paddy Baker

The ever-increasing interest in smart building technology will be reflected at ISE 2013, both in the conference rooms and on the showfloor. ISE’s first-ever Smart Building Conference will take place on Monday 28 January (the day before the exhibition opens), supported by KNX and Connected Living. “As building automation and energy management become more important in the design and sustainability of both commercial and residential buildings, it is vital that we hear the voices of all those involved in their development – including architects, design consultants, developers, electrical contractors and more,” said Mike Blackman (pictured), Integrated Systems Events managing director, speaking at a press event in Amsterdam in July. The conference will share

branding with Smart Building @ ISE – a dedicated area of the showfloor, which is set to be twice the size of the 2012 Energy Management Pavilion. These show features come

as a direct result of the post- ISE 2012 questionnaire, in which attendees expressed a desire to see more building automation, energy management and related technologies. The Smart Building

Conference will be managed by new recruit Marieke Bouman, who has joined Integrated Systems Events in the new role of conference and events manager. As well

UNITED KINGDOM New Openingz for Imago

Imago has launched a recruitment agency specialising in the

appointment of personnel for vendors and resellers involved in the video communications sector. The agency, www.Openingz.com, is being led by Imago’s new international recruitment manager, Abigail Brown (pictured). Brown joined Imago in May 2012 to manage the organisation’s recruitment needs in Belgium, the

Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Spain and the UK. She will continue in this role, while simultaneously developing Openingz.com, which is headquartered at Imago’s Thatcham, Berkshire office. “Our own recruitment

requirements have become very demanding over the years,” said Ian Vickerage, managing director, Imago Group. “To ensure we maintain the highest standards when selecting staff, we have implemented

meticulous selection processes.” The new agency will identify and introduce quality candidates including sales account executives, business developers, sales managers and graduate account managers along with technical specialists. All candidates will be assessed using recruitment processes such as psychometric testing and proprietary sales assessment tests. “We are already using these

selection techniques in our internal recruitment of staff very successfully,” said Brown, “and we are ideally qualified to extend this into an agency service aimed at other video communications companies. There is nobody else specialising in what is essentially a specialist sector, and we have a unique understanding of the requirements that vendors and resellers need in the appointment of new staff.” www.imagogroupplc.com

Definition and Strategy Study (see Industry Data, page 16). ISE attributes this to differences in the methodologies of the two surveys – for instance, in their differing definitions of residential technology – and to the fact that the ISE show is drawing an increasing number of attendees from beyond Europe.

as building and facilitating the conference programme at the ISE show, Bouman will also be developing ISE events at other times of the year. Blackman stressed that ISE

was still looking to work with external partners to provide the content for conferences. ISE is considering adding activities on the last day of the show to change

attendance patterns, making the number of visitors on each day more uniform. In 2012, 86% of visitors came on day two, while 64% attended the first day and just 44% came through the doors on the last day. The press event also

provided an opportunity to share some other findings of the 2012 attendee survey.

One hundred and thirty countries were represented among the 40,869 visitor base – an impressive number, but smaller than IBC and NAB. Germany and the UK each accounted for more than 5,000 attendees. The country that saw the largest increase in visitors was Brazil (up 80%), followed by Turkey (50%), UAE (45%) and Russia (40%). Visitor numbers declined from Portugal (down 2%) and Greece (a 7% fall). While attendee numbers

from the Netherlands rose 14%, this is less than the overall increase of 17%, meaning that the proportion of local visitors fell slightly. In fact, ISE outguns many other industry tradeshows in its proportion of non-domestic

attendees: at 74%, this is significantly higher than Prolight + Sound (43%), NAB (27%), PLASA (26%) and InfoComm (17%). The overall growth of ISE

has won it the accolade of third-fastest growing tradeshow in the world from Expomagazine. This award, announced in January, refers to the 2011 figure – the 2010 show was in ninth place. The post-show survey also

provided information on attendees’ spending power, and hence the size of ISE’s market, which has been calculated at €20.2 billion. This is significantly higher than the figure of €12.6 billion for the European AV market in InfoComm’s recently announced Market

Blackman also announced the launch of the SeeHearTouch charitable programme. This will build on the work done in the UK by ISE sales manager Ian Morrish in rallying the industry to install home cinemas into children’s hospices. SeeHearTouch will carry this work into mainland Europe, providing a subsidy for each project. It is expected that three or four projects a year will be run under the programme: the first will be at the Irmengard Hof in Chiemsee, Bavaria – other projects are being sought in France and the Benelux region. Finally, in response to a question about the 2013 keynote presentation, Blackman was tight-lipped, although he did say that it would be “something totally different” from this year’s keynote by Gerhard Schulz of Ingram Micro. He also revealed that it would be “entertaining” and “very much about this business”. A full announcement would be made in September, he added. www.iseurope.org
