WELCOME & CONTENTS EDITOR’S COMMENT A sporting summer

TO SAY that I am a fair-weather sports fan is, if anything, an overstatement. For instance, the week-by-week unfolding drama of Premiership football passes me by, and I struggle to empathise with people who refer to their team as ‘we’, as if they had been out there on the pitch with them. Another example of my general off-the-sports-radar status: a few years ago,

when I commuted by car, about my only exposure to sport news was from radio reports. The absence of pictures or text meant that the knowledge I gleaned was occasionally incomplete or unreliable. For a considerable time, I thought that there was a footballer called Nicola Zanelka, and that the English cricket team featured a pair of brothers, Andrew and Freddie Flintoff. And yet… every so often, an event comes along that you just can’t help

‘Every so often, an

event comes along that you just can’t help getting swept up in’

getting swept up in. As I write this, the Olympics are just a few days away, and I’m attending one of the technical rehearsals of the opening ceremony this very evening; a couple of colleagues are going to the other one a couple of days later. Team GB seems to be quietly confident that the country will have its best-ever medal tally at the Games. As if to prove their point, Bradley Wiggins has just become the first Briton to win the Tour de France, and was apparently back in the saddle the very next day as part of his Olympic training. All in all, after the relentless build-up, there is a creeping sense of excitement

that I’m finding it hard to resist. Even the publicity lockdown, designed to maximise the sponsors’ return on their investment, which has made it all but impossible for us to report, ahead of the Games, on any of the kit that’s been installed at Olympic sites, has only slightly dampened my enthusiasm. That’s not to say that I will be spending the duration of the Games watching

all the 24 extra channels that the BBC is launching as part of its goal to broadcast the entire event. But it does mean that I’m really getting a sense of a historical event taking place just a few miles away, which won’t be repeated in my lifetime. I really think that London 2012 will be a Games to remember.

BRIEFLY, SOMEhousekeeping points. Please note that the editorial phone number for Installation(as well as sister titles PSNEuropeand TVBEurope) has changed to +44 20 7354 6002. Please amend your records, and don’t use the old number – this is now exclusively for Music Week. Also, as I mentioned last month, please join our LinkedIn group. We’ve had

some interesting discussions there about, among other things, the impact of counterfeit and pirated goods on the market, and the state of the UK tradeshow market in the light of recent announcements. Do join the group and take part in the conversation.
