trends in the industry – including the ever-rising profile of video. “In the next three to five years, video will become as ubiquitous as the telephone used to be,” it says, boldly. The increasing use of video continues to be a major opportunity for the industry: the report quotes figures from Cisco that indicate annual growth of 78% per annum in mobile data traffic from 2011 to 2016.


In videoconferencing, the


biggest opportunities over the next three years will be in desktop and mobile solutions, and Cloud-based services will lower the price of market entry for end-users. The need to offer managed services, rather than simply installing the equipment, is highlighted. Digital signage, says the


report, “finally feels like a real industry”: increasingly pervasive (there were roughly 3.5 million digital signs globally at the end of 2011), increasingly interactive (with the use of technology such as QR codes and autostereoscopic 3D), mobile and intelligent.

next big thing: “Industry contacts in North America report that the Cloud comes up in almost all customer conversations and everyone is thinking about it, even if they have not gone there yet.” However, there is much less reported interest in Europe, due to concerns over reliability and security; additionally, in parts of central and Eastern Europe the infrastructure is not sufficiently developed. The upshot appears to be that the Cloud will be a major factor in

the future, but it will be adopted at varying speeds, one application at a time, on the customers’ terms. One obstacle to growth identified in some markets is a shortage of suitably skilled and experienced people. In developing markets such as Latin America, Eastern Europe, Asia, Middle East and Africa, this is seen as a significant problem. An issue with the quality and quantity of staff in North America and Western Europe is also mentioned.. Focusing on North America,


one area of disappointment is sustainable AV which, says the report, “has not lived up to industry expectations”. A lack of standards and certifications – and even a lack of agreement of the meaning of ‘green AV’ – has meant that any product can be marketed as green, whatever its level of energy efficiency or carbon footprint. This is despite the efforts of InfoComm, and other bodies, in the STEP initiative. There is also some frustration that AV does not fall within the scope of the LEED green building standard. 
