MAKING LIGHT WORK


Wigan Council Energy Management has halved energy bills and CO2 emissions at one of its busiest car parks by installing award-winning LED lighting.


This work has been carried out as part of the council’s borough- wide Carbon Management Programme, which has delivered energy effi ciencies of more than £200,000 over the last fi ve years in council buildings.


The new light fi ttings, now installed at Water Street multi- storey car park, use 45 per cent less energy than the pre-existing system. And with the use of light sensor control, they will save the council more than 50 per cent on their energy bills. At current operational time,s they

will also save 35 tonnes of CO2 per annum.


At the same time, the light levels and light uniformity within the multi-storey car park have been improved which will enhance customer experience and security at the site. Tom Harrison, MHA Lighting MD, said: ‘We were delighted to have our products specifi ed for Water Street car park, and knew we had a solution that could slash energy bills whilst improving light levels.’


A shopping centre car park is celebrating a bumper year after picking up another award and recording zero incidents of reported crime in the past 12 months. The Potteries Shopping Centre in Stoke-on-Trent, managed by Europa, has not only had its Park Mark renewed for the ninth year running, but has also remained crime-free as 1.2 million cars visited throughout the year. Europa has managed the Potteries Shopping Centre car park on behalf of Capital Shopping Centres


(CSC) since 2006 and has successfully retained the Secure by Design Park Mark Award during that period. In addition, the multi-storey remains the only one in the Staffordshire town to have achieved the Association of Chief Police Offi cers award. Michael Steele, operations manager at The Potteries Shopping Centre, said: ‘This award confi rms the fact that we have a safe, clean and secure car park. Our teams work constantly to achieve this and I am pleased that our hard work has again been rewarded.’
