MONTHLY ROUND-UP BPA ACTIVITIES

as a result of the collaboration between BPA and HM Treasury and Royal Mint. We worked closely in 2010/11 regarding the introduction of new 5p and 10p coins, and the opportunity to meet at the source of all UK and many overseas coins was not to be missed. EMSSIG is also working closely with European colleagues through the European Parking Association to devise standards for payment card standards in electromagnetic vending. Meanwhile, the UK Parliament Outreach

Teams have been explaining how parliament works. In July, the support teams met in London to discuss how they could better serve the membership (that’s you!) and what future events and meetings might look like. If you would like to know more about the support teams and who your local representatives are, contact tanya.g@britishparking.co.uk.

Focus on forums This month, the Parking Forum discusses parking in the context of facilities management, focusing on campus parking at healthcare and university sites as well as in the retail environment. The Parking Forum is an important stakeholder group for BPA. This is

where we discuss the impact of parking on people’s lives. The BPA’s policies and objectives are informed by this work. The Safer Parking Scheme promotional video produced by Pulse is also doing the rounds. It’s available for viewing on the website – do take time to have a look at it. I think you’ll be impressed by the amount of promotional activity in places such as driving schools, universities, car rental and leasing, motor insurance comparison websites, to name a few. Park Mark is rapidly approaching 5,000 awards and we are likely to reach this milestone shortly. We will, of course, make a big fuss of the 5,000th award holder. Could that be you? The Higher Education SIG is pressing on with its benchmarking exercise, which will enable parking and travel plan managers at universities and higher education

establishments who are members of the BPA to benchmark their travel plans, permit schemes, parking facilities, and public transport accessibility. The work of this group is featured elsewhere in this issue. Members of the Health Care SIG are reinventing the Hospital Parking Charter, which will be renamed the Health Care Parking Charter, emphasising its wider remit and the need for all healthcare facilities to ensure that parking facilities are operated successfully for the benefit of patients, visitors and staff. The BPA Model Contract Group is active in expanding the availability of the Model Contract which, until now, has primarily been used in the outsourcing of Civil Parking Enforcement, but which could be used successfully in health care, higher education, retail and commercial facilities management environments. A great workshop was held with representatives from these groups to explore how best we could extend the Model Contract into these sectors.

I hope this little resumé demonstrates just how much there is going on in your Association. Your involvement shows that there really is action in the BPA!
