SAFER PARKING SCHEME
A SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT
A parking facility in Wembley, north London, is celebrating after achieving Park Mark status. Wembley Parking is
Safe as HOUSES
It would defi nitely be wrong if the car park at the West Midlands Police Community Safety House – the only such police building in existence in the country – did not have a Park Mark award. The car park at the house and at the rear of Brown Hills police station (which is next door) were both assessed in view of the Safer Parking Scheme, and both were awarded the Park Mark award. The house is equipped with Secure by Design products to reduce crime and fear of crime, and products are showcased here to demonstrate their use.
PEAK PERFORMANCE
Crawley’s leisure centre, K2, has just celebrated its fi rst year of accreditation of the Safer Parking Scheme Park Mark award.
Owned by Crawley Borough Council and managed by Freedom Leisure, the centre is popular and well-used in the area. The Park Mark gives reassurance to many users of the facilities.
Since April 2011, with an annual vehicle throughput of 730,000, a relatively small number of incidents had been recorded, resulting in the facility being a safe and non- threatening environment for patrons of the leisure centre.

The parking area is regularly patrolled by staff, electronic surveillance and good lighting are in place, and a very good standard of management practices with clear audit trails is in use.
Mike Bibby, Safer Parking Scheme development manager, said: ‘I am extremely pleased at the result, which enabled the award to continue and I would like to congratulate all personnel involved.’ ‘Patrons of the leisure centre can be confi dent that their safety and that of their vehicles are taken seriously, with any issues being kept to an absolute minimum.’
located opposite the stadium and offers pre-pay parking for Wembley Stadium and Wembley Arena. The facility holds 89 spaces, which can be booked online via the website. Mostly used for commercial businesses, it consists of two adjoining car parks, with a minimum of two staff on duty at all
times when the facility is in operation. The car park is also used when events take place at Wembley.
After the initial inspection, new lighting and CCTV were installed, and the facility was awarded Park Mark status for the fi rst time. Tim Brady, site manager
at Wembley Parking, said: ‘We are elated to have achieved the accreditation, and are dedicated to providing a streamlined and safe contract parking experience.’
Men at work
While this isn’t strictly about a new Park Mark award, we like to include photos and this is a great shot showing two assessors in action. Rob Drury, Derbyshire’s architect liaison offi cer, and Tony Maxfi eld, parking manger for Chesterfi eld Borough Council, are discussing their fi ndings while carrying out car park assessments in front of the famous bent spire of the Church of St Mary and All Saints in Chesterfi eld.
