ike many British seaside towns, Southwold’s fortunes as a resort are hugely dependent on the weather. Visit the Suffolk resort on a cold, grey day in January, with squalls and showers lashing in off the North Sea, and you could be forgiven for thinking much of the town had been abandoned – with empty streets, deserted beaches and under-used car parks. Come back on a hot summer’s day, however, and the transformation is nothing short of astonishing. Thousands of visitors throng the town’s famous Victorian pier, bustle between art galleries and designer clothes shops, sup famous Adnams ales in


Southwold’s fi ne array of pubs, and descend on the timeless harbour to try their luck at crabbing or sample the fresh, local seafood. Of course, the resort’s parking needs ebb


and fl ow almost as regularly as the tides on the Suffolk Heritage Coast; some days it’s easy for visitors to park wherever they want, while there are frequent tales of car-loads of over-heated holidaymakers circling the town in the summer months, desperately searching for a free space.
