BSOs: Change the law

Bikes in boxes should be given a full PDI and follow up, but can a law enforcing those that set bikes up are trained make BSOs safer? asks one BikeBiz reader…

Dear BikeBiz As a small IBD, we’re growing increasing alarmed at the quality of some bikes we see come into the shop – mainly those that are sold by High Street catalogue stores and supermarkets. In many cases the bikes barely meet

standards, but what causes greater alarm is that they are sold in boxes. I would not sell any bike without a full pre- delivery inspection and follow up. How can anyone get away without doing something as basic as that?

It should be made part of law that everyone

has trained staff to at least Cytech level 1, but preferably level 2, and that all bike get a pre- delivery inspection and setup. If that happened then there would be less poor quality bikes on the streets and maybe us IDBs might get fair prices for what we’ll sell. But more importantly that that, it will stop this disposable bike culture that is occurring and reduce the number of unsafe, substandard bikes that are being sold to the un-educated general public. I’d like to see a change in the law. I feel very

strongly about this matter and would like to hear the trade’s thoughts on the problem.

Could we collectively push for a change to

legislation to prevent bikes from leaving stores without a detailed and qualified assessment of its safety for use on the roads? Robert Pollen Managing Director Withington Cycles

What’s stopping the

trade pushing for safety legislation relating to building bikes?
