EYE on food & drink
Hearty temptations A
They say the nicest things come in small packages and that is the case at The Hearty Oak where tempting British Tapas creations have been added to the menu. Kat Withers reports
S The Hearty Oak celebrates its third anniversary, the venue has come up with a way for us to sample all our favourite pub meals with its new Great British Tapas menu.
Whether you’re looking for an exciting starter, a meal with friends where you don’t have to choose between your favourites, or just a bar snack while you enjoy a drink, the exciting Tapas menu offers a range of delicious choices.
When Dronfield Eye colleague Mike Firth and I called in recently for a spot of lunch, we couldn’t decide between all the tempting Tapas dishes, so we ordered a selection and shared them. Offering Great British Tapas dishes for £3.95 each, or six items for £18, the selection ties in perfectly with the rest of the menu, using Derbyshire’s seasonal ingredients to create freshly cooked, high quality pub favourites, perfectly complemented by a pint of locally brewed ale.
While both of us voted the Mini Meat and Potato Pasty, with Real Gravy, as one of our favourites, Mike named the Pork and Tomato Sausages with Barbecue Sauce in his top three, along with the Crispy Belly Pork, with Crackling and Apple Sauce.
Across the table, I was enjoying the Bread Selection, dipped in Olive Oil and Balsamic Dip, along with the Goats Cheese Fritter with Summer Fruit Coulis. Completing our Tapas feast was a Beer Battered Black Pudding Fritter, with Apple Sauce, and we both commented on how social the experience of sharing little dishes between us was.
But we weren’t done yet. Opting to share a dish from the Great British main menu, we were amazed by the presentation of the Seafood Platter - £12.95 - when it arrived at our table.
Presented on specially prepared newsprint, the Platter comprised of Battered Cod, Calamari Rings, fresh salad, Sweet Chilli Dip and a bucket of the Hearty Oak’s famous real, hand-cut chips. Set to be officially launched at the start of July, Mike and I were in agreement that the Great British Tapas is a perfect addition to the Dronfield Woodhouse pub’s already popular menu, which offers customers the choice of both modern and more contemporary dishes. Food is served seven days a week, from 12noon- 9pm, with an Early Bird Daytime Deal before 6pm, Monday-Saturday, when two courses cost just £11.95, or three cost £14.95.
