Council planting teams and the hardy volunteers from Dronfield in Bloom should be praised for making such great displays for Dronfield on the community flower beds despite the weather.

0114 2890225 Things to do this month:

• Stay on top of the weeds and take five minutes to have a hoe round. • Keep picking fruit and vegetables.

• Be on the look out for vine weevil and remove them. The white grubs eat away at plant roots, killing the plants. They especially like plants in containers.

• Keep deadheading roses. • All the early summer rain has given hedges strong foliage growth; keep your hedges trimmed.

Keep an Eye out for:

‘Love Parks Week’ runs nationally from 21st-29th July. Many towns of Dronfield’s size across the country are having their park space and common land reduced by increased new housing and road extensions. Many towns have been told ‘use it or lose it’.

EYE

Make sure this doesn’t happen here in Dronfield by using our parks which are for us all, the young and the young at heart! • Look out for the local area’s well dressing displays. Millthorpe Well Dressing will be on view from July 13th-22nd, with all donations going to the Stroke Association. • It will be worth your while visiting Coal Aston on Sunday, July 15th, when ten beautiful gardens in the village will be open to the public. From 1pm-5pm, you’ll be able to explore all ten gardens for just £3.50, while lunches will be served at Coal Aston Methodist Church, from 12noon-1.30pm, followed by afternoon teas.

Programmes, which allow entry to all the gardens, are available from the church, Steels Hardware Store, Chesterfield Road, Dronfield, or David’s Fruits, Barnard Avenue, Coal Aston. • Donating a rose to be planted in Coal Aston’s new community garden is a great way to celebrate a special occasion or remember a loved one. With 16 roses currently planted in the Diamond Jubilee Rose Garden, anyone wanting to add their own bloom should call Sylvia Thompstone on 01246 414847. The Jubilee Garden will also be entered in Dronfield in Bloom’s ‘most improved area’ category.

August’s tip:

If you are thinking about making border changes this autumn by dividing existing summer flowering perennials, take photographs of how your garden looks now. This will remind you of the colours of the different flowers and the size the plants grow (or add your own labels at the base of each plant ready for the autumn work).

ITH the unusually cold and wet start to summer, bedding plants have taken longer than usual to establish.
