T County-wide search
for community heroes
HE search has begun for community heroes as Derbyshire County Council starts the hunt for Excellence in the Community award- winners.
The council wants to hear about exceptional people, groups or organisations that have worked tirelessly: • To raise money for good causes; • As volunteers; • To protect and enhance the Derbyshire environment; • To make Derbyshire a safer place to live work and visit; • To encourage closer, caring and active communities; • To promote Derbyshire through sporting, musical, academic or artistic success. The authority will be hosting a ceremony at the Devonshire Dome, Buxton, on Monday, 15th October. Individuals, groups, businesses, voluntary groups and charities that are improving the lives of others will be honoured at the awards, which are now in their sixth year. Coun Andrew Lewer, Leader of the County Council, said: “It is right to recognise the outstanding contribution that those who volunteer make to our communities. They make a huge impact and deserve our thanks for their hard work. “Please tell us about truly exceptional people who put the needs of others first and make a difference to their communities by making that extra effort which makes them stand out. ” You can nominate someone at
www.derbyshire.gov.uk/excellenceawards. Forms are also available in libraries. The awards are open to anyone over 18 years of age. The authority’s Derbyshire Young Achievers event recognises people under 18. Closing date for nominations is Friday, 10th August.
Welfare Committee’s very own Diamond Jubilee
S the Queen celebrates her Diamond Jubilee, a Dronfield group will be celebrating its own 60th anniversary with her. Dronfield Old People’s Welfare Committee was formed back in 1952 and continues to meet on a regular basis to this day. Comprising of representatives of older people in the town, and members of the Town Council, the Committee supports three local groups, all of which welcome new members. The Tuesday Social Group organises transport to a weekly afternoon of social activities, the Darby and Joan Club meets on a Friday and the Thursday Luncheon prepares meals for its 40 members and is celebrating its 50th birthday this year. Sixty years ago, the Clerk to Dronfield Urban District Council, Mr R S Woodhead, put forward the idea that the Council would like to establish an ‘old people’s club’ in Dronfield.

Following this, Derbyshire County Council found two possible sites where the club could be located, which led to the building now known as Gosforth Lodge being built in Cliffe Park and the Dronfield Old People’s Welfare Committee was born.
New defibrillator
Dear Dronfield Eye, MY husband, Roger Evans, aged 59, suffered a cardiac arrest on the football pitch at South Normanton after refereeing the match between South Normanton Reserves and Borrowash Victoria.
He was given the best first aid treatment available at the time, but did not survive. My children wanted something good to come from this, so investigated purchasing defibrillators.
Instead of flowers, we asked for donations to a fund, which, supported by Sheffield and Hallamshire FA, would be used to purchase defibrillators for grassroutes football clubs in South Yorkshire and Derbyshire. This is on-going and, importantly for Dronfield and separately from the other funds, The Talbot Charity - based at the Talbot Arms pub, Stubley Lane - made the very generous gesture to purchase a top-of-the-range defibrillator outright. The family chose the location and Gosforth Fields seemed the perfect choice; Roger played football there, our children played in various teams and school sports and Roger refereed there.
So many people now use the fields and a defibrillator is a vital piece of first aid and first response equipment. Sue Evans, Carr Lane, Dronfield
Stonelow’s successful netball squad Sporting double P
UPILS from Stonelow Junior School have enjoyed sporting success in not one, but two recent competitions. Year 6 pupils triumphed in the family netball tournament – winning all but one of their games in the process – meaning that they represented Dronfield in the district finals at Eckington.
In a closely fought battle, which had the spectators on the edge of their seats, Stonelow came second – a superb achievement. Teacher Mrs Wright said: “I am so proud of how they played; they gave absolutely everything and I couldn’t ask for more.” Following on from this, the mixed Y3/Y4 mini-tennis team were overall winners in the Dronfield tournament, which was a new addition to the competition calendar this year.
In another gripping district final, the Stonelow team came second out of six teams. Ben Finch, captain of the team, said: “It was fantastic to represent the school at this competition.”
